In Obsidian’s captivating fantasy action RPG, Avowed, players are introduced to a rich tapestry of combat approaches and character builds. Although the game features a limited selection of classes, the depth within the three distinct ability trees—Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard—offers extensive customization options for players.
Each class is defined by unique skills and abilities tailored to different playstyles. Players can choose to focus their progression in one class or explore multiclassing to combine abilities from all three trees for a more versatile build.
Fighter

The Fighter ability tree is centered on delivering an “overwhelming combat force, ”perfect for players who prefer martial engagements at close range. Specializing in this tree allows access to various melee weapon abilities, stamina-enhancing skills, and defensive blocks to maximize resilience.
Optimal Fighter Starting Background
For aspiring Fighters, selecting the “War Hero”background during character creation is advised. This choice boosts both Might and Resolve to a value of 3, enhancing your combat capability and stamina management significantly.
Comprehensive List of Fighter Skills
Req. Level | Fighter Class Skills | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Charge | Armored Grace | Shield Bash | Brawn | Toughness |

Ranger

The Ranger ability tree emphasizes “agility and finesse, ”making it ideal for those who prefer mid-to-long-range combat and nimble melee tactics. Unlike the heavy-hitting Fighter, the Ranger’s proficiency allows for a dynamic playstyle that encourages strategic engagement and evasiveness.
Players can also create a build focused solely on ranged combat by utilizing a mix of weapons like Bows and Arbalests, providing a balance of quick, light strikes with powerful, heavy shots.
Optimal Ranger Starting Background
For those intent on becoming a Ranger, the “Vanguard Scout”background is the best choice during the character creation process. This selection enhances Perception to 3 and increases both Constitution and Dexterity to 2, although you will lack a Bow at the start.

Wizard

The Wizard ability tree is dedicated to spellcasting, featuring an extensive array of offensive spells, defensive enhancements, and elemental effects. Players can elevate their magical prowess by acquiring upgrades for their Wands and Grimoires, enhancing their control over arcane arts.
Each Grimoire offers a selection of spells that can be cast during its use. Furthermore, any spell learned from the Wizard tree can be cast independently of its associated Grimoire, granting an added level of flexibility.
Grimoire Mastery
Progressing through the Wizard ability tree requires players to allocate Ranks to the Grimoire Mastery passive. Each level allows access to new spells and effects, although advanced abilities on the right side of the tree remain locked until Grimoire Mastery is enhanced.
Optimal Wizard Starting Background
To embark on your journey as a Wizard, select the “Court Sorcerer”background during character creation. This choice boosts both Perception and Intellect to 3, fundamental attributes for maximizing spell effectiveness and range. Although you won’t begin with a Grimoire or Wand, locating them in the tutorial area is relatively quick.

Multiclassing in Avowed

Avowed’s class system allows for seamless multiclassing. Notably, the class ability trees are non-exclusive, meaning players can enhance their characters by diversifying their skill sets without restrictions imposed by their chosen background.
While it’s feasible to specialize heavily in one class, multiclassing presents distinct advantages:
- A pure Wizard is often vulnerable in close-quarter combat, but by adding skills from the Fighter tree for better armor management, you can significantly improve your defensive capabilities.
- A Ranger can greatly benefit from accessing crucial spell-based crowd control options, while Fighters can gain powerful buffs and area damage effects that are only available through Wizard abilities.
- Some innovative builds, like the combination of Fighter and Wizard skills to create a Spellblade, thrive on the versatility that multiclassing provides.
There are no specific prerequisites for multiclassing other than your overall character level, and for Wizard spells, advancing your Grimoire Mastery is necessary. This freedom allows for endless customization; should a particular build not meet your expectations, you can easily respec your abilities using in-game gold.
