Exploring Quests in Obsidian’s Avowed: Multiple Approaches to Adventure
Obsidian Entertainment is raising the bar for quest design in its upcoming RPG, Avowed. The studio’s Environment Region Designer, Berto Ritger, revealed in an interview with GamesRadar that players can expect to initiate nearly every quest through various paths.
Diverse Quest Initiation: A Core Feature
Ritger emphasized the flexibility players will enjoy, stating:
“I think almost every, if not every, quest in the game has it more than one way to start it. You can do things out of order and pick up items and give them to people that want them, or kill a character or whatever, like, you can play things out of order. You can come at a dungeon or vice versa, from a different direction than you normally would.”
This design philosophy aims to enhance the sense of exploration, encouraging players to interact with the world in their own unique ways, thus fostering a spirit of wanderlust.
Gameplay Experience: Early Impressions
During my recent hands-on preview of Avowed, I found these claims intriguing; however, it was challenging to fully assess this feature due to the limited number of available quests. The idea of starting a quest after discovering its item, rather than before, is indeed appealing and can create a more dynamic gameplay experience.
That said, there’s an important caveat: players should manage their expectations regarding the game’s open-world design. While there is an environment conducive to exploration in the initial area, the game does not yet reach the expansive freedom of iconic titles like The Witcher 3 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Nonetheless, meaningful exploration remains a cornerstone of the experience.
Rewarding Exploration and Missable Content
Ritger pointed out that the allure of role-playing games lies in the possibility of discovering missable content, which encourages players to explore thoroughly. This mechanism enhances immersive storytelling and player engagement, making their journey in Avowed feel rewarding and unique.
Launch Details
Avowed is set to launch on February 18 for PC and Xbox Series S|X. Recently, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated that the game’s release was postponed to ensure it avoids the bustling Holiday season, despite the game being largely complete.
For gamers eager for a fresh RPG experience that emphasizes player choice and exploration, Avowed presents an exciting prospect.
