A recent interview with Avowed‘s director, Carrie Patel, unfolded the intriguing development history of Obsidian Entertainment’s new title, indicating it began as a multiplayer venture inspired by Skyrim. Over its six-year development period, the game faced two major overhauls that ultimately eliminated all multiplayer features, allowing it to evolve into its current single-player format.
First unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020, Avowed was released for PC and Xbox Series X/S just recently, marking its entry into the acclaimed Pillars of Eternity universe. So far, critical reception has been mostly positive, with many praising its immersive gameplay, vast exploration opportunities, and compelling narrative, despite noting the presence of several bugs.

Patel discussed the challenges she faced stepping into the role of director after the last reboot. The large team size added complexity to project management and communication, akin to “building the tracks while the train is moving forward.” The development experienced two significant shifts: first, a commitment to deeply integrating the lore of Eora, and second, a decision to eschew the expansive open-world format traditionally associated with such RPGs.
The decision to restructure Avowed into segmented zones, similar to those found in The Outer Worlds, stemmed from difficulties in replicating the vast open-world experience of Skyrim. The team believed this new approach would enhance gameplay flow and narrative depth.
Interestingly, the delay of Avowed, originally scheduled for 2024, was not attributed to developmental issues but rather a strategic decision. In a statement from last year, Xbox head Phil Spencer indicated that postponing the game to 2025 was primarily to balance releases on the Xbox Game Pass, which was scheduled for a lineup featuring other major titles, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and STALKER 2.
Despite the rollercoaster of development challenges, Avowed has successfully made its mark since launch, achieving a significant presence on Steam and ranking among the top sellers, illustrating the keen interest in this newest addition to the RPG landscape.
