Privacy Breach Experienced by AT&T Customer During Phone Reset

A troubling incident occurred when an AT&T customer visited a retail location to trade in her old phone. Her experience soured when she encountered a sales representative who allegedly overstepped professional boundaries while assisting her. The customer subsequently took to Reddit to inform the public about the encroachment on her privacy, hoping to raise awareness among fellow consumers.

The incident took place on March 12, when the customer sought help from an AT&T representative to reset her phone and check account information via the AT&T app. While she handed over her device, the representative reportedly misled her by suggesting he needed to access her account details. Instead, he accessed the customer’s Google app and posted a review of the store on her behalf, without her knowledge or consent.

This troubling incident was uncovered only after the customer received an email notification indicating that a review had been submitted in her name. Expressing her outrage, she commented:

I have never been more angry/uncomfortable due to an associate at any store. The fact that he just went through my phone to post this review and in front of me is wild. I have deleted the review that he left and posted a new one of my own about this same story. This is unacceptable behavior.

Understandably furious, the customer promptly deleted the unauthorized review and submitted a new one detailing her negative experience. She reported the incident to the store manager, who assured her that appropriate action would be taken against the employee’s behavior. Surprisingly, many other Reddit users shared similar stories, pointing to a culture within AT&T that appears to endorse such practices.

Reports suggest that AT&T may tie employee commissions to positive customer reviews, potentially incentivizing representatives to engage in unethical behaviors to meet targets. Such actions not only compromise customer trust but also pose significant risks to the brand’s integrity in a competitive market. It is crucial for companies to address these unethical practices proactively to maintain customer loyalty and the overall reputation of their services.
