For those who have experienced the vibrant atmosphere of Cumberland, it’s not unusual to wake up feeling disoriented in the company of lively friends. While chat about remedies for hangovers or exploring the best local pubs is enticing, our attention today shifts to Atomfall—a survival game that takes players into a post-apocalyptic scenario fraught with challenges.
In Atomfall, you awaken in a desolate bunker, stripped of your identity and grappling with the reality of survival. However, not everyone you encounter is empathetic; many inhabitants are armed and dangerous, making your journey even more precarious.
As you ponder, “Well, then, I suppose I can just engage them directly, ”you should think twice. While taking a direct approach seems appealing, you quickly learn that hostilities come in groups, and attacking one can easily draw the ire of others.
In any title that falls under the banner of a post-nuclear disaster game, resources such as ammunition and healing supplies are crucial but scarce. Therefore, it’s wise to consider combat a last resort; after all, even the mightiest weapon won’t serve you well without ammo—or life.
Lemington Shotgun
Location: Slatten Dale
Despite its name, the Lemington has no connection to the American firearm manufacturer Remington, yet it serves as your introductory weapon upon exiting the bunker.
To acquire it, take the path to the left and enter the first house you encounter. Navigate around the corner to find a box containing supplies. From there, jump through the small window on the right, leading into a room that holds some ammunition—and a lifeless figure.
Loot the corpse to obtain the Lemington single-shot shotgun, and proceed to unlock the door on your right to exit. Keep in mind, while this shotgun can be lethal at short distances, its lengthy reload time can leave you vulnerable to counterattacks. At longer ranges, its performance diminishes considerably, making you feel more like you’re using a firecracker than an effective firearm.
Terrier.22 Rifle
Location: Slatten Dale
The.22 long rifle cartridge holds the title of being the world’s most popular bullet due to its affordability and reasonable accuracy. You can find this basic yet functional firearm amidst the remnants of abandoned homes in Slatten Dale, just outside Wyndham.
Navigate past a derelict truck and look for a watermill on your left. Venture behind this structure and crawl beneath the boards for access. Be cautious of a tripwire and nail board that could catch you off guard; stick to the right wall to avoid them.
Once you navigate past the traps, the far corner of the room reveals a neglected Terrier.22 rifle along with a handful of rounds. Though this bolt-action rifle boasts the lowest damage output, it is your only readily accessible option that excels at longer ranges. Prepare to swap weapons if enemies approach too closely, as it may take several shots to incapacitate them.
Mk. VI Revolver
Location: Slatten Dale
Looking to channel your inner Dirty Harry? The six-shooter Mk. VI revolver awaits you. As you traverse through Slatten Dale towards Wyndham village, be wary of the train yard’s unsavory characters who won’t think twice about taking you down.
On the opposite side of the train yard, there’s a house with a not-so-subtle “PISS OFF”scrawl—an invitation to rummage the premises. Enter through the south side and follow the left wall to find a staircase. Though it may seem like a dead end at the top, a hole in the far wall beckons you to squeeze through.
Quickly to your right lies a narrow passage leading to the Mk. VI revolver along with some ammunition. Historically, the Webley revolver was used by the British Army until the 1960s, eventually being replaced by the Hi-Power semi-automatic. Though slower and less precise compared to its successor, the Mk. VI hits hard, albeit with a slower reload process.
Hi-Power 9mm Pistol
Location: The Interchange
As your first weapon that allows you to navigate without putting your life at risk, the Hi-Power 9mm pistol can be found during your initial exploration of The Interchange.
Enter through Wyndham and follow the signs towards the central processor; this path guarantees a smoother experience. You’ll encounter closed main doors, but with a bit of maneuvering, you can crawl under one left ajar. Proceed down the corridor until you reach the stairs.
After climbing the stairs, head straight for the Central Processor room where you’ll discover a couple of deceased scientists. A body slumped against a control panel offers supplies, an atomic battery, and the rusty Hi-Power pistol, primed for action.
While it may lack the long-range accuracy of the.22 rifle and deal less damage than the shotgun at close range, the Hi-Power compensates with a rapid rate of fire. While your initial shot might not take down an adversary, follow-up shots can seal the deal.
Bullpup Assault Rifle
Location: Casterfell Woods
In discussions of British bullpup rifles, most think of the L85, which has proven its utility since the 1980s. In Atomfall, however, you’ll be hunting for the exceptional JM-3, a weapon that shines in the early game and is crucial to progressing through tough encounters.
Located in Casterfell Woods at the dam entrance, approaching this weapon requires some stealth. While you’re in the vicinity, consider stopping by to converse with Mother Yago for valuable intel.
Your mission begins by dodging or dispatching ferals in the tunnel while steering clear of their corrosive spit attacks. Once you’re past, keep to the north with the garden complex on your left, jotted with three hives. You can either charge in or tactically reduce their numbers with grenades for a safer approach.
The former owner of the rifle lies in the middle of this hive zone; you can grab the rifle without much interference, though the druids nearby might not appreciate your presence unless provoked.
The JM-3 represents a significant upgrade for your arsenal, boasting a large magazine, high fire rate, and decent accuracy accompanied by a low-magnification scope. Just be mindful: with great power comes the potential for rapid ammunition depletion if you tend to spray and pray.
Interestingly, the JM-3’s real-life equivalent, the EM-2 rifle, was briefly selected as the British Army’s service rifle. However, the decision was reversed in favor of the FN FAL variant for NATO harmonization purposes. The Commonwealth’s adaptation of the rifle involved dimensions measured in imperial units, resulting in low compatibility with its metric counterpart—a fascinating footnote in military history.
