Atomfall Guide: Tips for Locating a Metal Detector

Atomfall is an immersive game that skillfully incorporates British culture into its gameplay. While some elements, like cricket bats and teapots, are quite obvious, others are more nuanced. A prime example is the inclusion of the Metal Detector, a nod to the popular British TV series, Detectorists.

This clever reference not only adds a layer of British charm but also serves a vital gameplay function. Players can utilize the Metal Detector to uncover hidden caches of resources and essential items, provided they know where to search. To assist you in mastering this tool, we’ve prepared a comprehensive guide that will transform you into a skilled Detectorist in no time.

How to Locate a Metal Detector

Molly the Trader

Your adventure begins in Wyndham, specifically in Slatten Dale. This region offers ample opportunities for players to gather supplies for crafting and survival, yet be prepared to encounter outlaws and various traps. It’s wise to tread carefully and avoid hostile zones initially.

One excellent location to acquire essential items is the Trader Camp, situated at coordinates (26.4E, 79.1N).Here, you’ll meet Molly, a trader who can provide you with valuable information and gear if you engage in trade with her. Among her offerings, you’ll find a variety of useful items, including a Shiv Recipe, a Torch, an Atomic Battery, and notably, a Metal Detector.

As this item is considered low-value, you can purchase it along with the Torch by trading just one Molotov Cocktail, with the option to include additional ammo to make your trade more balanced. Alternatively, if you prefer a more direct route, the barkeeper at The Grendel’s Head in Wyndham Village also sells a Metal Detector.

Near the Waterwheels

Your second option offers a free way to acquire a Metal Detector, located in the Slatten Dale starting area. However, this method comes with significant risk, as it involves looting the body of a fallen outlaw. This will likely bring you close to leeches and nearby threats, including the Waterwheels, Railyard, and an outlaw camp.

If you approach stealthily, you may successfully snag the Metal Detector and escape unnoticed. However, be prepared for potential confrontations, as danger lurks around every corner in this area.

Brinsop Manor

Your final acquisition method requires you to venture into Skethermoor under Protocol rule. Access can be granted either through the Slate Mine in Slatten Dale or by befriending Captain Sims for free passage.

Once inside, navigate to Brinsop Manor at coordinates (39.4E, 77.5N).Here, search the grounds—excluding the hedge maze—for a body that will yield a Metal Detector.

Using Your Metal Detector

Now that you’ve acquired the Metal Detector, let’s explore how to effectively use it. Fortunately, this tool doesn’t require hotkey assignment: it will emit a beeping noise when something of interest is nearby.

To equip your Metal Detector, simply follow the on-screen button prompt. Once equipped, hold the L2 or LT button to sweep the detector over the ground, ensuring the red light stays centered while you move toward the potential treasure. The Detector will signal with more frantic beeps as you approach the right spot.

When you’re in the correct location, press R2 or RT to dig, and you will typically uncover a Cache or Lunchbox containing valuable items. The simplicity of the Metal Detector makes it a game-changing asset, especially when you’re in dire need of supplies.
