The BTF connector is poised to address the increasing power demands of GPUs like the GeForce RTX 5090. Originally designed to facilitate cable-free PC setups, ASUS’s BTF technology has evolved to make the most of the GC-HPWR connector integrated into their latest motherboards, thereby eliminating the need for a standard 16-pin power connector.

With the GC-HPWR (Graphics Card – High Power) version 2.5, available on ASUS’s cutting-edge motherboards, users can harness up to 1000W of power as per the specifications. In a recent demonstration, ASUS’s Tony conducted extensive tests on the ROG Strix RTX 5090 BTF, showcasing the robust capabilities of the GC-HPWR. Initially, he provided nearly 600W to the GPU, aligning with its standard thermal design power (TDP).

Subsequently, Tony ramped up the power to an astounding 1300W, delivering over 1000W through the GC-HPWR without any signs of strain; the connector’s temperature remained comfortably below 40 degrees Celsius. He tested the limits further, pushing the load to nearly 1900W with a massive 150A current flowing through the connector—a level that far exceeds the capacity of the traditional 16-pin options. Remarkably, the temperature stayed just shy of 40 degrees Celsius even under such extreme conditions.

In an innovative move, he added a second 1600W ROG power supply alongside the GC-HPWR connection, linking it to a 16-pin power cable connected to the GPU. The dual power supply setup successfully delivered over 300W from each source, demonstrating that simultaneous use of both power connectors does not jeopardize the GPU’s integrity—disproving previous concerns regarding potential damage. However, it’s important to note that this dual-rail configuration is not intended for retail products.
