ASUS has begun rolling out critical BIOS updates for several of its gaming laptops to address ongoing stuttering issues, with plans for additional support in the near future.
ASUS Unveils Beta BIOS for 2023 Strix SCAR 15 and Zephyrus M16 to Resolve Stuttering Issues
Recently, users of ASUS ROG laptops reported experiencing frustrating performance problems, including stutters, freezes, and audio crackling. Fortunately, these issues have been traced back to firmware discrepancies rather than hardware failures. An analysis conducted by a GitHub researcher known as “Zephkek”highlighted firmware malfunctions as the culprits. In response, ASUS has acknowledged the situation and commenced investigations to identify a suitable resolution.
True to their word, ASUS has officially announced a new Beta BIOS aimed at ameliorating these problems. Initial coverage will focus on two specific models: the 2023 STRIX SCAR 15 and the 2023 Zephyrus M16. The rollout of this Beta BIOS is expected to occur next week, with ASUS indicating plans to extend this update to additional models in the not-too-distant future.

The source of the problem lies in the laptop’s firmware, particularly concerning the Windows ACPI.sys
file. This essential component interprets commands related to power and hardware from the BIOS; however, it was reportedly receiving flawed or inefficient code. Consequently, this led to notable latency spikes occurring every 30 to 60 seconds, resulting in stuttering and overall performance degradation. Poorly designed routines—including unnecessary high-priority interrupts and misguided power cycles for GPUs—were also contributing to these issues.
Recognizing the need for a firmware update, ASUS has publicly shared the news of the Beta BIOS rollout via their ROG North America account on X. Users of the specified models are encouraged to try the new Beta BIOS, with the assurance that doing so will not void their product warranties. Additional BIOS updates for other affected models are scheduled for release in early October.
