ASUS has made a significant leap in external GPU technology by opting for Thunderbolt 5 over Thunderbolt 4 in its latest ROG XG Station 3 dock, setting the stage for compatibility with future graphics processing units (GPUs).

After nearly eight years since the release of its predecessor, the ROG XG Station 2, ASUS has returned with the ROG XG Station 3, equipped with a Thunderbolt 5 port. This upgrade represents a remarkable enhancement in data transfer capabilities, essential for modern GPUs.

ASUS showcased the ROG XG Station 3 and a range of innovative products, including a 610 Hz gaming monitor, at the recent Computex event. The dock is designed to maximize performance for both NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series and AMD’s RX 9000 series GPUs. With compatibility for PCI-E 4.0 and PCI-E 5.0 interfaces, gamers can expect exceptional performance.

While Thunderbolt 5 may not fully rival PCI-E performance, it still delivers an impressive 80 Gb/s bandwidth. This capability allows the ROG XG Station 3 to bring near-desktop levels of performance with GPUs such as the GeForce RTX 4090. According to ASUS’s benchmarks, users can expect performance enhancements in certain titles compared to the mobile version of the RTX 4090.

The incorporation of the Thunderbolt 5 port allows gamers to seamlessly connect their chosen graphics cards to the dock, achieving significant performance gains. The ROG XG Station 3 is also designed with multiple USB ports, facilitating a tidy, efficient setup. This dock supports ASUS’s BTF graphics cards, enabling users to install powerful GPUs like the GeForce RTX 4090 BTF without the hassle of directly plugging in power connectors, simplifying the installation process.

While the exact power supply specifications have yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated that the ROG XG Station 3 will require at least 800W, up from the previous version’s 600W. This increase should comfortably support high-demand GPUs such as the RTX 5090, which can draw up to 600W under load.
