Exploring the Revamped Parkour System in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Following the recent delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft has been actively unveiling various features of this highly anticipated title in the action-stealth genre. The developers have previously shared insights on elements such as stealth tactics and combat styles for the samurai and shinobi protagonists. Recently, they’ve highlighted a significant enhancement in the parkour system.
Enhanced Parkour Mechanics
Returning to familiar controls, the “Parkour Up”button allows players to quickly ascend structures at a rapid pace. The game’s shinobi protagonist, Naoe, showcases superior agility compared to the samurai character, Yasuke, boasting the ability to jump farther and climb higher.
Descending Parkour Techniques
Associate Game Director Simon elaborates on the two primary methods for descending during parkour. The traditional technique involves using the dodge/parkour down button near a ledge, resulting in a holding position for the character to scale down. Alternatively, players can execute a directional dodge, which launches Naoe into a series of acrobatic maneuvers, adding a dynamic flair to the gameplay.
Sprinting: A Vital Feature
Sprinting is not only vital for traversal but also serves as an effective escape mechanism for both characters. However, Yasuke faces challenges due to his armor, while Naoe’s speed gives her an edge. Furthermore, Naoe introduces the innovative Spring Dodge ability, enabling her to evade projectiles while performing agile rolls over obstacles. This mechanic encapsulates the essence of an action-packed experience.
Utilizing the Grappling Hook
Another exciting addition is Naoe’s physics-based grappling hook. Simon emphasizes the necessity of this feature in any shinobi-themed game. It seamlessly integrates into Naoe’s parkour routine, allowing her to ascend, swing, and wall-run effortlessly, enhancing her movement capabilities.
Advanced Parkour Features for Naoe
Ubisoft is introducing advanced parkour maneuvers exclusive to Naoe. These include directional dodges while in a prone position, wall run jumps, and a stylish method for jumping off ledges that involves a flip. This expansion of gameplay elements showcases her agility and offers players diverse strategies during missions.
Terrain Accessibility and Gameplay Balance
To maintain balance in gameplay, most of the terrains and buildings will be climable, yet certain surfaces lacking handholds will remain inaccessible to both characters. Simon elaborates on this design choice, stating that it encourages thoughtful creation of parkour routes, enhancing the contrast between Yasuke’s and Naoe’s playstyles.
