Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Choosing Between Yasuke and Naoe for Gameplay

Dynamic gameplay is a hallmark of many modern games, and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows exemplifies this with its engaging dual protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe. Their enriching sibling-like bond and distinct playstyles, rooted in their unique character backgrounds, significantly enhance the gaming experience.

While players are required to experience both characters, this guide aims to assist you in determining which protagonist to prioritize for side quests and exploration. After completing the game, I will share insights on their characteristics and my personal preference.

Key Differences Between Yasuke & Naoe

Before diving deeper into their individual characteristics, it is essential to highlight the major differences that define Yasuke and Naoe’s gameplay styles:

Naoe Yasuke
Naoe is agile with a limited health pool, making her vulnerable to quick defeats. Yasuke, thanks to his rigorous samurai training, boasts high durability, able to withstand multiple attacks.
Weapon types: Katana, Kusarigama, and Tanto. Weapon types: Long Katana, Naginata, Kanabo, Bow, and Teppo.
Unique abilities include Eagle Vision, Grappling Hook, and various shinobi tools. Yasuke possesses a Bull Rush ability, enabling him to charge down enemies and barriers alike.
Naoe emphasizes stealth gameplay, utilizing tools for silent eliminations. Yasuke’s approach is more direct and combative, encouraging a rush-in approach against foes.
Naoe moves swiftly and has superior parkour skills compared to Yasuke. Yasuke’s size hinders stealth, making him easier for enemies to detect, especially on lower difficulties.

It’s important to note that players will control Naoe only for the initial hours of the game, after which Yasuke becomes available following the completion of the Temple of the Horseman quest. Additionally, gameplay will require utilizing both characters for certain missions, so ensure each is well-equipped regardless of your preferences.

Furthermore, both protagonists share the same levels and Mastery Points, with unique dialogue variations during quests like pursuing members of the Shibakufu group or other elite targets.

Choosing Between Yasuke and Naoe

Based on my experiences in the game, my conclusion is clear: Naoe outshines Yasuke as the superior protagonist in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.

Despite her low health and vulnerability, mastering combat mechanics, including parrying and dodging, mitigates these weaknesses. With the appropriate skills, Naoe becomes a formidable force in the mid-to-late game.

Her kunai are lethal, capable of eliminating enemies with a single headshot. Additionally, when upgraded, her Assassination Damage Skill allows players to dispatch even the toughest samurai without direct confrontation.

Naoe is also the ideal choice for exploration: her grappling hook facilitates easy access to Synchronization Viewpoints, and her speed enhances traversal, making the game world feel more accessible.

While Yasuke may not be as strategically versatile, he excels in scenarios requiring brute force. He is a solid option for players who prefer engaging in direct combat and clearing out hordes of enemies with minimal strategy. Personally, I often use him for contracts, where the focus is on swift combat rather than stealth tactics.

It is worth mentioning that players will often have the flexibility to use either Yasuke or Naoe for various quests, providing some leeway in gameplay approach.
