
The ongoing concerns regarding melting 16-pin power connectors show no signs of abating. Fortunately, ASRock has introduced a potential remedy in the form of its innovative 12V-2×6 L-Type connector cable, designed specifically to address this issue.
ASRock Introduces Advanced 12V-2×6 L-Type Connector Cable With Built-in NTC Sensor
In recent weeks, reports of burnt and melted 16-pin power connectors—particularly those used with high-end RTX 50 series GPUs—have been alarmingly frequent. While the industry has seen some improvements with the introduction of the 12V-2×6 standard, the problems persist due to the fundamental design flaw where all power draws through a single pin. Unfortunately, this design oversight continues to lead to issues, as evidenced by ongoing instances of severely melted connectors on both graphics cards and power supply units (PSUs).

ASRock’s newly launched 12V-2×6 L-Type connector cable could provide a viable solution to this persistent problem. This advanced cable features a built-in NTC sensor designed to monitor changes in resistance. When it detects potential overheating, the sensor provides Over-Temperature Protection, maximizing safety during operation. It is important to note, however, that this cable is exclusively compatible with ASRock power supply units. Specifically, it will only function with the Taichi and Phantom Gaming series.

Visually distinctive, the L-Type connector cable adopts a dual-color design that indicates whether the plug has been fully inserted, a feature previously used by MSI. While this addition enhances user-friendliness, it does not completely eliminate the risk of melting connectors, as evidenced by several cases. Nevertheless, given that ASRock’s offering is currently one of the most sophisticated options available, it presents a strong choice for users looking to minimize operational issues—keeping in mind the necessity of upgrading to an ASRock PSU.

To maximize the performance and safety of the 12V-2×6 power cable, ASRock recommends several best practices: connectors should always be properly inserted, click-locked, and securely seated. Users should also take care to avoid bending the cable excessively, particularly around the connector area, as many of the melting incidents have been attributed to inadequate clearance for bends. While the L-Type design mitigates some of this risk, it is prudent to refrain from applying excessive force in these critical areas.
The ASRock 12V-2×6 L-Type cable comes with a 2-year limited warranty, and reports suggest it will retail for approximately $40. Though it may seem like a significant investment, it could very well be worth it to prevent costly damage to a high-end GPU.
