In the gripping Netflix series I Am A Killer, the case of Ashley Morrison and her boyfriend Christian Sims unfolds, centering around the tragic 2014 murder of Annie Lois Sims, who was Christian’s grandmother. Reports indicate that Christian shot her multiple times while Ashley stood beside him throughout the horrific act.
Despite not firing the weapon herself, Ashley faced conviction as a co-conspirator in the crime. Under Texas law, specifically the Law of Parties, anyone who aids in a murder is treated as equally culpable, leading the jury to find her guilty alongside Christian.
The second episode of season 5, titled “Lost Innocence,”dives deep into the murder case of Annie Lois Sims, featuring exclusive insights from the perpetrators and individuals connected to the incident. The episode is summarized as follows:
“A seemingly innocent romance spirals into chaos as Ashley Morrison’s desire to escape with her beau, Christian Sims, culminates in the tragic murder of his grandmother.”
Involvement of Ashley Morrison and Christian Sims in Annie Lois Sims’ Murder
The episode reveals that both Ashley Morrison and her partner Christian Sims were apprehended merely two days following the murder of Annie Lois Sims in 2014. Instead of going to trial, Christian opted for a guilty plea in 2016, receiving a 35-year sentence for first-degree murder, while Ashley chose to contest the charges in court.
Following her arrest, Ashley was interrogated multiple times by law enforcement. In her initial statement to Texas Ranger Stacy McNeal, she insisted she had no knowledge of her boyfriend’s intentions, denying any knowledge of him having a gun.
During a subsequent interview, however, Ashley changed her narrative, revealing that she had assisted Christian in loading a firearm. She confessed that he had threatened to kill both of his grandparents that same night, yet she took no measures to prevent it and instead participated.
As a result, Ashley Morrison was convicted of the murder of Annie Lois Sims in 2017 based on Texas Law of Parties. Even though she did not directly carry out the act, the jury deemed her a willing accomplice under state law.
In a turn of events, Ashley managed to have her conviction overturned after appealing to a Texarkana appeals court in 2019, resulting in a new trial. Ultimately, however, she pled guilty to Annie Lois Sims’ murder in exchange for a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
