Remedy Entertainment Expands Its Supernatural Universe
Remedy Entertainment is diligently expanding its interconnected supernatural universe, which first took shape with the release of Alan Wake. With the launch of Alan Wake 2 and its subsequent expansions now complete, the studio is gearing up to transition Control 2 into full production slated for 2025. During the recent Capital Markets Day results, Remedy announced exciting new details about this highly anticipated sequel, which will incorporate role-playing game (RPG) elements.
Introducing RPG Mechanics in Control 2
While specifics on the RPG elements remain under wraps, this innovation marks a significant shift for a franchise that melded action-adventure gameplay with narrative depth. The first game featured a protagonist endowed with unique supernatural abilities, allowing players to navigate a linear storyline amid a complex, explorable environment. Players who have completed Alan Wake 2‘s latest expansion, The Lake House, might find clues as to the narrative direction that Control 2 will take.
New Collaborations and Media Adaptations
In a strategic move, Annapurna Pictures announced a co-financing partnership with Remedy in August 2023. This collaboration enables Annapurna to develop film and television projects based on both the Control and Alan Wake franchises, all while Remedy retains ownership of the intellectual property. It remains to be seen whether these adaptations will integrate with existing game narratives or offer distinct retellings from a fresh perspective.
Upcoming Updates and Sales Milestones
In addition to developments surrounding Control 2, Remedy disclosed plans to update the original Control in early 2025, unlocking previously released content. The title has achieved impressive sales, amassing 4.5 million copies sold since its debut in 2019, and has garnered a total of 19 million players, a figure that likely includes users from subscription services provided by Microsoft and Sony.
On another front, Alan Wake 2 has recently reached 1.8 million copies sold since its release a year ago. Notably, 40% of players have completed this gripping action-horror title, and reports suggest that it is on the brink of reaching profitability, a significant milestone for the studio.
Stay tuned for more updates as Remedy Entertainment continues to evolve its compelling narratives and gameplay experiences.
