Throughout the years, the enigmatic Zodiac Killer has inspired numerous artistic interpretations, the most recent being the Netflix series This Is the Zodiac Speaking, which features Arthur Leigh Allen, a former teacher with a troubling past involving molestation charges.
Although it seems unlikely that the true identity of the Zodiac Killer, who instilled fear in California’s Bay Area during the late 1960s, will ever be unveiled, the quest for answers and the intrigue surrounding the case continues to resonate to this day.
Arthur Leigh Allen remains a persistent person of interest in this infamous case. Once a Navy veteran and educator, he faced legal trouble years later when charged with child molestation. Notably, two of his former students, David and Connie Seawater, revealed that Allen confessed to David, stating he was indeed the Zodiac Killer.
This confession, though lacking in official documentation, marks the only instance in which Arthur Leigh Allen, the prime suspect believed to be connected to the Zodiac murders, disclosed such information to anyone.
Profile of Arthur Leigh Allen: Who Was He?
Arthur Leigh Allen was born on December 18, 1933, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He spent his formative years in Vallejo, California, where he held various jobs without settling into any specific career for long. In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served until 1959.
Following his military service, Allen pursued education and held teaching positions at several schools. He took a job as a teacher at Valley Springs Elementary School in 1966 after relocating to Valley Springs, California. During this decade, he formed a close relationship with David and Connie Seawater and their mother, Phylis.
Reports indicate that Allen frequently took the children on outings, including lengthy drives. On one occasion, after such a trip, Connie and David recalled that he returned with “red stuff on his hands”and appeared extremely tired. They later noted that he was in the same area at roughly the same time as the murders of 18-year-old Robert Domingos and 17-year-old Linda Edwards. While these particular murders were not officially connected to the Zodiac, the Seawaters held differing opinions.
In 1966, during another excursion, David and Connie alleged that Arthur Leigh Allen drugged them. The day before this incident, Cheri Jo Bates was found murdered nearby, which the Seawaters suspect was another potential victim of Allen.
Following Allen’s arrest for molestation in 1974, the series of murders linked to the Zodiac Killer ceased, further fueling speculation about his involvement.
In a revealing conversation in 1992, prompted by his mother, David reached out to Allen, who admitted to molesting Connie after having drugged the children. When David inquired about his potential link to the Zodiac murders, Arthur allegedly confessed that he was the killer. Allen passed away on August 26, 1992, at the age of 58.
As of now, there has not been official verification regarding his identity as the Zodiac Killer; nevertheless, he remains one of the most plausible suspects in this ongoing mystery.
Netflix’s newly released three-part documentary seeks to delve deep into the case, examining all available evidence, and will explore the heinous crimes attributed to the Zodiac Killer.
