Significant Insights on Jon Cryer’s Regret Over Superman and Lois
- Jon Cryer expressed disappointment at missing the opportunity to appear in Superman and Lois, following his impactful portrayal of Lex Luthor in the Arrowverse.
- The Superman and Lois series diverged from the Arrowverse by establishing its narrative in an alternate universe.
- Due to James Gunn’s recent appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios, Superman and Lois was canceled to prevent interference with Gunn’s upcoming Superman film featuring Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
In a recent reflection, Jon Cryer, known for his role as Lex Luthor, revealed a heartfelt regret about his absence in the Superman and Lois series, which recently concluded its run on The CW. His portrayal of Luthor introduced audiences to a complex character who initially shared a camaraderie with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, which eventually crumbled due to fundamental ideological clashes.
Initially appearing in Supergirl during its fourth season, Cryer’s Lex Luthor transitioned from an old ally to a formidable adversary as he was imprisoned, only to later redirect his hostility towards Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl. Cryer’s Luthor played a pivotal role in not only Supergirl but also in various Arrowverse crossover events. However, as Superman and Lois developed its own identity, it introduced a new version of Lex Luthor, portrayed by Michael Cudlitz, while choosing to exist independently of Arrowverse’s continuity by placing the show in an alternate Earth.
During an interview with KJ Today, Cryer shared his admiration for the franchise’s ability to delve deeply into the DC Comics lore. He commended the production team behind Superman and Lois for capturing the essence of Superman in a way that resonated with viewers. Regrettably, Cryer lamented not having a chance to join the show, stating:
The whole Arrowverse was just one for the nerds. I loved being a nerd. I loved reveling in it. We got into the deepest, darkest recesses of DC lore. I am sorry to see ‘Superman & Lois’ go as well, because I think that was just a fantastic new look at those characters. They really managed to crack it by being faithful to who Superman is. And my biggest regret is that I never was on it.
Superman and Lois was initially intended to be part of the Arrowverse, with Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane making her debut during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, which acted as a backdoor pilot for the show. However, the showrunners were compelled to shift direction due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a gradual distancing from other Arrowverse series until it was ultimately established that Superman and Lois occupied a separate universe, as confirmed in the season 2 finale.
Cryer’s tenure as Lex Luthor concluded with the sixth and final season of Supergirl, coinciding with the premiere of Superman and Lois. Following the appointment of James Gunn as co-CEO of DC Studios, several ongoing projects faced cancellation under Gunn’s new vision for an interconnected DC Universe. This included Superman and Lois, which was terminated to avoid disturbing the release of Gunn’s new Superman film featuring David Corenswet in the title role.
Despite undergoing a reboot, not all previous DC characters are being discarded; notable figures from The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Blue Beetle are set to return. However, the Superman franchise is undergoing a significant overhaul, which will introduce Nicholas Hoult in the role of Lex Luthor. How Hoult’s interpretation will compare to previous live-action iterations remains an open question.
Those interested in the Supergirl series can find it available for streaming on Netflix.
