ARM’s Advancements in the Data Center Market Creating Challenges for x86 Competitors
The current excitement surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) has paved the way for many companies to reap substantial benefits, and ARM stands out as a prominent player that has achieved remarkable growth in just recent years. Historically recognized for its dominance in mobile technology, ARM made its foray into the data center segment, initially gaining traction primarily through partnerships with Apple’s M-series System on Chip (SoC).However, according to a report by Reuters, ARM has astonishingly increased its data center clientele by 14 times since 2021, underscoring its significant accomplishments in this arena.
Moreover, the number of applications utilizing ARM-based systems has doubled since 2021, indicating a growing adoption of its technology in the market. Major clients, including Amazon, have projected confidence in ARM’s capabilities, as evidenced by the company’s provision of millions of chips for Amazon’s custom-designed ARM-based processors, known as the Graviton series, which serve AWS customers.

In addition to Amazon, giants like Google and Microsoft have integrated ARM technology into their offerings. Google employs Ampere’s Altra processors for its clients, while Microsoft similarly incorporates ARM solutions. This transition highlights ARM’s ability to capture a significant share of the data center market, ultimately diminishing the stronghold held by x86 rivals like Intel and AMD.
ARM’s influence isn’t limited to the data center realm; it has also made inroads into the personal computer market. The collaboration with Qualcomm to produce Snapdragon X Elite chips represents a significant threat to the x86 architecture’s traditional dominance. Furthermore, as ARM gears up for the potential release of an AI-focused PC chip in collaboration with NVIDIA, it positions itself as a formidable competitor to both Intel and AMD in the computing space.
