ARM Halts Efforts to Revoke Qualcomm’s Chip Design License, Confirms CEO to Analysts

The legal battles surrounding Qualcomm’s in-house Oryon cores have sparked significant debate within the tech industry, notably prompting action from British chip design leader ARM. ARM’s lawsuit against Qualcomm claimed infringement related to licensing agreements, but the situation took a turn when an eight-member jury concluded that no breach had occurred. ARM, however, remains resolute in pursuing a retrial, even as Qualcomm’s CEO, Christiano Amon, revealed during an earnings call that ARM has decided against terminating its licensing agreements.

Potential Resolutions Post-Trial: ARM and Qualcomm Navigating Agreements

In an earlier statement from October, ARM threatened to terminate Qualcomm’s licensing deal due to Qualcomm’s use of proprietary in-house designs following its acquisition of Nuvia. ARM’s contention was that Nuvia had violated its licensing terms. However, in a recent report by Reuters, it was mentioned that ARM has now retracted its move to rescind the licensing agreement.

“Arm recently notified us that it was withdrawing its October 22, 2024 notice of breach, and indicated that it has no current plan to terminate the Qualcomm architecture license agreement.”

The reasons behind ARM’s withdrawal of the breach notice remain undisclosed. Nevertheless, during the December trial, Judge Maryellen Noreika remarked that neither party emerged as a clear winner and cautioned that a retrial might not yield a different outcome. She expressed hopes that both companies would reach a mutual agreement, emphasizing that past trial results may negatively impact ARM if they chose to pursue Qualcomm further.

It is plausible that the two firms have reached an undisclosed settlement, possibly involving Qualcomm agreeing to a higher licensing fee to secure peace. This development could set a precedent, inviting competitors such as MediaTek to explore the creation of Oryon-like cores for their upcoming chipset offerings.
