Ariana Grande recently shared insights into her complex relationship with her devoted fanbase, sparking extensive discussions on social media. On Monday, September 30, Vanity Fair released a lie detector test video on YouTube featuring Ariana Grande and her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo.
During the test, Cynthia Erivo asked Ariana if she loved her “very dedicated”fanbase. The singer quickly replied with “very much,”which the lie detector confirmed as truthful. However, when questioned about whether she loved them all the time, she elaborated:
“I love them always, but I think sometimes they can hurt my feelings. Sometimes I don’t like them, but I love them always. Does that make sense?”
The lie detector deemed this response truthful as well, prompting Erivo to express her admiration for Ariana’s honesty, calling it “such a sweet”response. She added:
“It’s a hard relationship I think, that’s sort of weirdly parasocial but it feels very real to me, so sometimes it’s hard but I love them very much.”
Social media users resonated with Grande’s perspective on how fans can sometimes be hurtful. An X (formerly known as Twitter) user, @jps_aririah, advised her not to show affection for her fans, stating:
“She shouldn’t since 90% of them are horrible.”
While the reactions varied, many social media users expressed agreement with Grande, noting she “ate”with her comment and “clocked”the haters. Fans shared their own experiences, highlighting that toxic followers can also hurt their feelings. Here are some notable X reactions to Grande’s comments:
The hashtag #ARIASARIANA trended as users acknowledged that many celebrities likely share similar sentiments about their fans. Some even expressed that Ariana’s fanbase may not deserve her.
“I don’t like it”- Ariana Grande on her fans being called ‘Arianators’
In the same Vanity Fair lie detector video, when Cynthia Erivo inquired if Ariana ever Direct Messaged a fan just to “chat,”Grande confirmed she did this regularly. She shared that she has even developed close friendships with three of her fans, maintaining these relationships for about 7 years.
Later in the test, Erivo asked Ariana if she was responsible for the name ‘Arianators’ and whether she liked it. Grande replied with “no”to both inquiries, at which point the lie detector indicated some “deception.”Ariana explained:
“I don’t like it. I mean I’ve accepted it, but would I pick that? Of course not. That’s insane.”
Additionally, Ariana addressed the rumors regarding plastic surgery concerning her appearance. The lie detector confirmed that Grande has never undergone surgery such as a nose job, breast augmentation, eye lift, facelift, chin implant, or Brazilian butt lift, though she remains open to the idea of getting a facelift in the future.
The singer remarked that this was one of the best days of her life, confronting “YouTube people”who perpetuate such rumors. She clarified that the only changes to her physical appearance included fillers in various areas and Botox, which she stopped using around four years ago. Ariana further stated:
“[I’m] in full support of all people who do these things. Work. Whatever makes women, men, non-gender-conforming people feel beautiful should be allowed. Why do we care?”
The highly anticipated Wicked, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is set to premiere in theaters across the United States on November 22.
