In the past year, rumors swirled regarding Apple’s development of the next-generation Watch SE, which would succeed the Apple Watch SE released in 2022. A significant aspect of this rumored update was a potential shift from aluminum to plastic as the primary material for the watch. This transition is believed to be aimed at reducing production costs.
Targeting a Younger Demographic
As the discussions progressed, it became clear that Apple’s strategy with the new Watch SE extended beyond just a material change. According to insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the plastic version of the Watch SE is intended for a younger audience, functioning as a smartphone alternative for children.
Challenges Arise in Development
However, as development advanced, complications emerged. In September of last year, it was reported that Apple encountered “cost and quality“issues related to the proposed plastic design of the watch. Recent updates from Gurman indicate that these design dilemmas have resurfaced, placing the future of the plastic Apple Watch SE at considerable risk.
Current Status of the Design
In the most recent edition of the Power On newsletter, Gurman elaborated on the situation, stating, “The redesigned, plastic Apple Watch SE I’ve written about is also in serious jeopardy. The design team doesn’t like the look, and the operations team is finding it difficult to make the casing materially cheaper than the current aluminum chassis.”This suggests that internal disagreements and production challenges are complicating matters significantly.

This fresh round of information marks a rare update on the plastic Apple Watch SE, and, regrettably, the outlook appears bleak. With the initial Watch SE launched over two years ago, there is a growing expectation for an updated model. However, how Apple will address the ongoing design hurdles associated with the plastic version remains uncertain.
