Apple’s Next-Gen HomePod: Display Innovations on the Horizon
Recent reports indicate that Apple is progressing in its development of a new HomePod variant, distinguished by its display capabilities. Insights suggest that there will be different models, including one that resembles an iPad in display functionality and another featuring a display mounted on a robotic arm, although this latter model may not see a release until 2026. Initially anticipated to launch before 2025, the iPad-like display HomePod is now projected by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo to debut in the third quarter of 2025.
Details on Display Supplier and Technology
Concerning the display technology, reports have emerged that Apple is poised to incorporate a 6-7 inch LTPS OLED display in its upcoming HomePod. This display is set to be supplied by Tianma, a Chinese manufacturer recognized as China’s fourth-largest display producer, trailing behind industry giants BOE and CSOT (China Star).
Interestingly, Apple appears to be steering clear of LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) display technology, which is generally more costly than LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) technology. According to SE Daily, this choice might stem from the anticipated limited use of the display in comparison to iPhones, emphasizing practicality for the HomePod’s intended usage.
Performance and Software Innovations
Rumors indicate that the upcoming HomePod could be powered by an advanced A18 processor and may feature Apple Intelligence capabilities. Additionally, there is speculation that Apple is working on a novel operating system tailored for its smart home devices, potentially named “homeOS”. This OS would provide a dedicated interface for managing home automation and smart device interactions.
Shifts in the Supply Chain Landscape
Industry analysts suggest a notable shift in the display supply chain, with China enhancing its OLED innovation capabilities. Historically, Apple has relied heavily on South Korean suppliers for OLED technology, making this potential shift significant, as it would mark China’s first major role as the sole supplier of OLED panels for Apple products.
Market Considerations
The initial shipment forecast for the new HomePod is approximately 50,000 units scheduled for the latter half of 2025. This conservative estimate reflects Apple’s measured approach in a market where competitors, primarily Google and Amazon, hold substantial influence.
