Apple’s Foray into the Foldable Market: A Potential Game Changer

Since the debut of Samsung’s first foldable device in 2019, the tech community has been abuzz with speculation regarding Apple’s intentions in the foldable arena. Despite a flurry of predictions and discussions, Apple has so far remained reticent about releasing a foldable product. However, recent insights suggest that the tech giant may be quietly developing a foldable iPad.

Insights from Industry Experts

Reputable Apple analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has reported that Apple’s design team is engaged in the creation of a large foldable iPad, expected to be unveiled in the coming years. Gurman indicates that while this innovative product may not provide a pure iPad-Mac hybrid experience, it will incorporate features of both devices, appealing to a wide array of users.

Eliminating Creases: A Bold Objective

One of Apple’s primary ambitions with this foldable iPad is to eliminate the noticeable creases that are commonly found in existing foldable phones. Instead, the company envisions an iPad that expands to the equivalent of two iPad Pros placed side by side. Reportedly, the development team is working on prototypes that boast near-invisible creases, setting a new standard for foldable devices. This eagerly awaited product has been in development for several years and may hit the shelves by 2028.

“It’s not yet clear what operating system the Apple computer will run, but my guess is that it will be iPadOS or a variant of it. I don’t believe it will be a true iPad-Mac hybrid, but the device will have elements of both. By the time 2028 rolls around, iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps, but it also makes sense to support iPad accessories like the Apple Pencil.”

Design Inspirations and Future Prospects

While the foldable iPad’s design specifics remain undisclosed, there’s speculation that Apple may draw inspiration from Lenovo’s Yoga Book 9i, which features two 13.3-inch OLED screens that operate in tandem. Unlike Lenovo’s model, Gurman suggests that Apple’s design philosophy focuses on creating a seamless, integrated display that enhances user experience. This could result in a substantial 20-inch Apple foldable iPad, offering users an expansive visual workspace.

Leaked Roadmaps and Industry Trends

Recent reports from Bloomberg coincide with a leaked roadmap released by market research firm Omdia, indicating that Apple plans to introduce an 18.8-inch foldable tablet or note PC with an OLED display by 2028. This aligns with emerging trends in the tech industry where larger, versatile devices are gaining popularity among consumers.

As we look ahead, the potential for a foldable iPad represents not only an evolution in Apple’s product line but also a shift in how users engage with technology. The forthcoming years will be pivotal as Apple navigates this exciting venture.
