Apple’s Potential Collaboration with ByteDance to Introduce Generative AI Features for iPhone Users in China Following Increased 2025 Capex

The deployment of Apple Intelligence for iPhone users in China faces several regulatory challenges, necessitating partnerships with local tech leaders to effectively introduce generative AI features. Apple has previously shown interest in collaborating with Chinese tech giants like Tencent and ByteDance to leverage their existing AI frameworks for entry into the Chinese market. Recently, reports suggest a stronger likelihood of Apple aligning with ByteDance, particularly in light of ByteDance’s ambitious plans to significantly increase its capital expenditure (capex) in the coming years.

ByteDance’s Major Investment: $22 Billion in AI Infrastructure

In response to the soaring demand for generative AI, ByteDance is set to invest a staggering $22 billion (approximately 160 billion yuan) in AI data centers in 2025. This investment aims to bolster capacity to meet increasing needs for processing billions of daily queries, a critical move supported by the rising requirement for enhanced server availability as organizations strive to improve AI functionalities.

ByteDance is demonstrating a serious commitment to generative AI, positioning itself as a valuable partner for Apple. This year, ByteDance’s capex stood at 80 billion yuan, a significant sum that rivals the collective investments of three major Chinese internet companies: Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent. Furthermore, ByteDance’s generative AI offering, known as ‘Doubao,’ boasts the second-highest global user base after OpenAI’s ChatGPT, making it a compelling ally for Apple’s ambitions in China.

As Apple approaches a market capitalization of $4 trillion, industry analysts believe that the limitations of Apple Intelligence’s current capabilities could pave the way for a transformative “supercycle” for iPhone. Given that China represents the largest smartphone market globally, successfully launching Apple Intelligence in the region is essential for the company’s growth strategy. Thus, it is expected that Apple will prioritize finalizing a partnership with ByteDance as swiftly as possible.
