Apple’s Innovative Patent for Flexible Speaker Technology
Though flexible display devices remain relatively rare among consumers, Apple is venturing into new territory by investing in research and development for flexible speaker technology. A recent patent published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) outlines Apple’s design for flexible speakers intended for integration within head-mounted displays (HMDs) and varied wearable devices.
How the Flexible Speaker Works
The patent reveals a sophisticated design featuring a speaker housing constructed with adaptable walls, along with magnets and a diaphragm engineered to consistently produce sound, regardless of whether the speaker is in a deformed or undeformed state. This innovation ensures that audio quality remains unaffected even when the speaker’s shape changes.
Adaptive Functionality with Sensing Technology
Apple’s flexible speaker includes a built-in sensor capable of detecting the curvature and degree of deformation affecting the flexible components. This data enables real-time adjustments to the speaker’s performance, ensuring that sound output remains optimal under varying conditions.
Enhanced Flexibility and Design Integrations
To further enhance flexibility, the patent suggests the incorporation of hinged sections in the speaker walls. This innovative design allows for seamless integration of one or more speakers within the head support of an HMD or even within the display unit itself, potentially constructed from materials such as glass, polymer, or liquid crystal.
The speakers can include housings that are flexible, deformable, bendable, or otherwise malleable in a manner consistent with a change in shape of the head support of the head-mounted display.
For example, in one configuration, the shape of the head support may be suitable for a user with a smaller, shorter, or narrower head. In another configuration, the shape of the head support may be suitable for another user with a larger, wider, or longer head.
Diverse Applications Beyond HMDs
Beyond their use in HMDs, flexible speakers have the potential to revolutionize various products that feature “designed folding portions”or those that face “constraints on packaging space.”This technology could make significant strides in enhancing user comfort, finding applications within clothing, backpacks, laptops, and smartwatches.
As trends in wearable technology continue to evolve, Apple’s forward-thinking approach to flexible speakers may redefine auditory experiences across a range of devices.
