Apple’s Intelligence Advertisement Launching a Redesigned Siri Sparks Lawsuit Over Forced Upgrades and Undelivered Features

Calling Apple Intelligence a disappointment would be an understatement. Recently, the tech giant retracted an advertisement featuring Bella Ramsey, which promoted an ‘enhanced’ Siri experience. Unfortunately, Apple failed to deliver the anticipated improvements in its voice assistant, leading to legal repercussions following the company’s promotion of its iPhone 16 lineup which boasted these unfulfilled features.

A Legal Challenge: Allegations of False Advertising and Unfair Competition

A federal class-action lawsuit was lodged on Wednesday in the U. S.District Court in San Jose, targeting Apple for allegedly engaging in ‘false advertising’ and ‘unfair competition’ practices. According to a report from Axios, while specific damages sought have not been disclosed, the lawsuit argues that consumers who purchased the latest iPhone models and compatible devices enticed by Apple Intelligence should receive compensation. The Clarkson Law Firm is representing the plaintiffs and has a history of taking on major corporations, including lawsuits against Google and OpenAI for similar practices related to AI technologies.

“Apple’s advertisements saturated the internet, television, and other airwaves to cultivate a clear and reasonable consumer expectation that these transformative features would be available upon the iPhone’s release. This drove unprecedented excitement in the market, even for Apple, as the company knew it would, and as part of Apple’s ongoing effort to convince consumers to upgrade at a premium price and to distinguish itself from competitors deemed to be winning the AI arms race.”

Despite pulling the advertisement that highlighted the updated Siri only after it was confirmed that these features would not be implemented until 2026, the promotion lingered online for several months. This could have misled prospective buyers into believing that Apple was on track to deliver these generative AI capabilities sooner. These delays have prompted Apple’s leadership shakeup, with John Giannandrea, the head of AI, being replaced by Mike Rockwell, known for his work on the Apple Vision Pro.

While Apple is accustomed to facing lawsuits, the plight of consumers is difficult to overlook. Many spent significant amounts for the promise of Apple Intelligence features that ultimately did not materialize. Additionally, there has been criticism regarding the incompatibility of generative AI features with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, which lack the necessary RAM and advanced Neural Engine despite being relatively new to the market. The convergence of these events indicates that legal proceedings are imminent, and we will keep our audience updated with any developments.
