Notably, Samsung has been rumored to be creating a three-layer stacked sensor tailored for Apple’s devices, showcasing next-gen advancements over Sony’s current offerings. Android manufacturers like OPPO and Vivo are working on their LOFIC camera solutions, while Sony is set to introduce a new camera featuring a 1/1.3-inch sensor by the end of 2026. Samsung is also advancing in this domain with a projected launch of a 200MP LOFIC camera sporting a 1/1.1-inch sensor expected in 2026 or 2027. This indicates that Apple might be trailing behind in this technological race, a situation not unfamiliar to the tech giant, which often adopts certain innovations later than its rivals.
Apple’s anticipated 100MP LOFIC camera is reportedly going to incorporate variable aperture technology, which is rumored to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max next year. This provides Apple with ample time to refine its proprietary solution. The company isn’t new to crafting specialized modules; it has previously utilized unique equipment for its F1 film projects, integrating a custom A-series SoC to record in ProRes format.
