
Apple is on the verge of unveiling its much-anticipated foldable iPhone, and new details are emerging regarding the innovative technology that will enhance its features. With a focus on ensuring the device meets high-quality standards, Apple aims to eliminate any visible creases on the display while also addressing known issues commonly associated with foldable devices. At the core of this effort is the hinge mechanism, which a leading analyst indicates will be constructed from liquid metal, boosting the phone’s durability.
A Revolutionary Hinge: Liquid Metal for the Foldable iPhone
Previously, reports suggested that Apple’s foldable iPhone would feature a seamless display devoid of creases. This improvement is likely to stem from a sophisticated hinge mechanism. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has pointed out that the use of a liquid metal hinge is central to this design, as it not only promises enhanced durability but also significantly reduces the likelihood of screen creases. This strategic choice aims to tackle the prevalent issues observed in other foldable models by various manufacturers.
The production of the liquid metal will involve a die-casting process, which is expected to optimize the hinge’s functionality. This engineering advancement aims to improve screen flatness and minimize crease visibility—issues that have historically plagued devices like those from Samsung and Google, eliciting concern from potential users.
It is noteworthy that Apple has previously utilized liquid metal in smaller components, such as SIM ejector pins, but this foldable iPhone will mark its first extensive application of this innovative material. For this project, Apple has partnered with Dongguan EonTec, who will exclusively supply the liquid metal needed for manufacture.
Anticipated Specifications and Designs
As the launch approaches, we have learned more about the foldable iPhone’s specifications. It is reported to feature an impressive 7.8-inch internal display alongside a 5.5-inch external display. While it is estimated that the dimensions may align closely with the Google Pixel Fold, Apple has yet to reveal its definitive design direction. Preliminary reports indicate that the device will adopt a book-style design, reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, as opposed to the clamshell design of the Z Flip.
In terms of camera capabilities, the foldable iPhone is expected to come equipped with a dual-camera system on the rear and a single front-facing camera. It will also integrate Touch ID functionality in the Home Button, similar to the iPad Air and iPad mini lineups, foregoing Face ID for this model. Furthermore, this device may become Apple’s slimmest to date, measuring a mere 4.5mm when opened, while folding could increase its thickness to approximately 9.5mm.
Mass production of the foldable iPhone is anticipated to commence in the last quarter of 2026, suggesting that consumers might first catch a glimpse of the device in early 2027.
