Apple’s 18.8-Inch Foldable Device for 2027: iPad or Mac? Exploring Operating System Options

Apple is actively exploring the realm of foldable technology, with plans to introduce innovative products in the near future. Recent reports suggest that the iPad Pro might be the first device to embrace this new form factor, setting the stage for a fresh era in Apple’s tablet evolution. In addition to foldable designs, the tech giant is also focusing on an OLED version of the iPad mini, projected for release in 2026. Notably, there are discussions surrounding a foldable iPad Pro that would unfold to the size of two traditional tablets.

Foldable Devices on the Horizon: Expected Launch in 2027

Industry expert Ross Young, from Display Supply Chain Consultant, indicates that Apple may unveil the foldable iPad Pro in 2027, featuring an OLED display that could mirror the technology of its current models. This upcoming iPad Pro is anticipated to boast a generous 18.8-inch screen, positioning it as one of the forefront devices adopting foldable technology. Additionally, there are unconfirmed speculations that Apple could also be developing a foldable MacBook.

According to a piece from The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s first large-scale foldable device could be designed with laptop functionality in mind, expected to measure about 19 inches when fully expanded. This isn’t the first indication of large foldable devices from Apple; Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has also revealed that Apple is in the works on a “giant”tablet anticipated to debut in 2028. The consistency of these rumors suggests that engineering teams at Apple are diligently working on such innovative concepts.

However, while the buzz around these gigantic foldable devices is growing, it is important to remember they may still be in the experimental phase. Apple may be holding out for advanced hinge technologies that meet their strict design criteria before making a formal announcement. The decision about whether this foldable device will function as an iPad or a Mac will hinge on the operating system they choose to implement.

In addition to foldable devices, Apple is progressing towards launching an OLED version of the iPad mini, anticipated to hit the market in 2026. Given Apple’s historical pattern of upgrading the iPad mini roughly every three years, the iPad mini 8 is expected to feature an OLED panel designed to alleviate issues like jelly scrolling. Furthermore, Ross Young reports that enhancements to the iPad Air models and the entry-level iPad with OLED displays may also be introduced in 2027, indicating a broader strategy to revamp their entire product line with OLED technology in the coming years.

As Apple prepares for these advancements, it raises questions about potential price adjustments for upgraded models. Will the enhancements in technology lead to price hikes for devices like the iPad mini? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
