Apple has been the subject of speculation regarding the development of two foldable devices, and recent reports provide further insights into their anticipated release timelines. The highly anticipated iPhone Fold is slated for a release in 2026, while the larger foldable model—described as a hybrid between a MacBook and an iPad—is now expected to miss its original 2026 production schedule, pushing its launch to 2027.
Apple’s Larger Foldable Device Delayed to 2027, iPhone Fold Scheduled for 2026 Launch
As reported by Jeff Pu, an analyst at GF Securities (as cited by MacRumors), the mass production for Apple’s foldable devices was initially set to start in the fourth quarter of 2026. This timeline aligned with the anticipated unveiling of the iPhone 18 Fold. However, while the supply chain supports the development of the smaller foldable, challenges with the production of the larger 18.8-inch model may ultimately hinder its debut in 2026.
At this juncture, it remains unclear whether the larger device will be categorized as an iPad or a MacBook. Previous disclosures indicate that this device is likely to operate with macOS rather than iPadOS, suggesting it may lean more towards the MacBook identity. Some industry experts, including Ming-Chi Kuo and sources from The Wall Street Journal, refer to it as a MacBook, while others, such as research firm Omdia and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, envision it as a foldable iPad, potentially launching as late as 2028.
The final decision regarding the operating system will play a crucial role in defining the device’s functionality. Mark Gurman has discussed how the advancements in iOS 26, particularly the Liquid Glass redesign, may influence the design and functionality of the foldable, offering an all-glass experience. In contrast, Jeff Pu believes that the iPhone Fold’s development is progressing smoothly, maintaining its scheduled release for next year.
The delay of the larger foldable may actually benefit Apple, allowing them to establish the smaller variant in the market before introducing the larger device. The design is expected to be simple, resembling a traditional MacBook when closed but offering the flexibility to open 180 degrees for a full tablet experience. With the details still very much under wraps, it’s advisable to approach this news with cautious optimism.
