
Celebrating its seventh anniversary in December, the iMac Pro has long been due for a refresh. With Apple’s transition to its own Silicon beginning in 2020, many hoped the all-screen workstation would be among the updated devices. However, recent reports indicate a different direction: instead of a revamped iMac Pro, Apple may be focusing on releasing a larger iMac that promises to meet similar needs at a more budget-friendly price point.
The Case for a Larger iMac
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his ‘Power On’ newsletter, the future of the iMac series appears to be leaning towards a larger model. He mentioned, “Apple will probably end up offering an iMac with a larger screen.”While he did not outright confirm that the iMac Pro will not receive an upgrade, the implication is clear. With the discontinuation of the Intel-powered iMac Pro, which offered a 27-inch display, Apple has the opportunity to position a new larger iMac as a successor without the Pro branding, potentially attracting a wider audience.
Economic Considerations: iMac Pro vs. Newer Models
For enthusiasts hoping for a renewed iMac Pro, it is essential to consider Apple’s economic strategy. The previous model started at a hefty price of $4, 999. In contrast, the M4-equipped iMac, featuring a potent 10-core CPU and GPU, along with 16GB of unified RAM and a 512GB SSD, can currently be found for approximately $1, 549.99 after a $150 discount on Amazon. This significant price disparity offers a compelling performance advantage, suggesting that the M4 iMac might outperform the now-discontinued iMac Pro at a fraction of the cost.
Future Performance Options with M-Series Chips
Should Apple choose to eventually release an updated iMac Pro utilizing its M-series chips, it will likely have to consider options like the M4 Max or M4 Ultra to truly differentiate this model from the existing lineup. However, the M4 Max is already deployed in the recent 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro editions, and is anticipated to feature in the upcoming Mac Studio updates as well, which could limit the uniqueness of a new iMac Pro.
Shifting Market Focus
Apple’s current trajectory suggests a strategic pivot towards capturing a larger segment of the market rather than solely catering to high-end consumers. This shift may explain why the company has not prioritized the development of a successor to the Pro Display XDR.
