Apple withdraws problematic update following bricked Apple Watch complaints
This serves as a reminder about the risks of installing pre-release software on primary devices. Recently, Apple launched watchOS 11.1 beta 3 for developers, but it caused some Apple Watch models to become bricked. Following numerous reports from users, Apple has since withdrawn the update, making it unavailable for further download.
According to MacRumors and several Reddit discussions, numerous users experienced their Apple Watches freezing completely after the installation of watchOS 11.1 beta 3. These smartwatches would function for a brief period before becoming unresponsive, failing to update information such as time. Although affected users can attempt to restart their Apple Watch by holding the crown and the power button, the issue tends to recur moments after the device restarts.
Unfortunately, end users are unable to restore the software and firmware on a bricked Apple Watch themselves. Reviving the malfunctioning device necessitates a visit to an Apple store, where the watch is sent out to their repair facilities for service.
This issue with bricked Apple Watches follows closely on the heels of Apple withdrawing the iPadOS 18 update for iPad Pro models that are equipped with M4 processors. Currently, Apple’s newest iPads are still operating on iPadOS 17, with users left without access to the latest updates. A similar situation occurred with HomePod Software 18.1 beta 2, which was also pulled due to complaints regarding bricked HomePods. It is quite surprising that Apple has left its leading tablet without the latest updates for such an extended period.
In addition to quality control issues, Apple users have raised other concerns. The company prominently advertises its Apple Intelligence features, claiming that the new iPhone 16 series was designed for Apple Intelligence “from the ground up.”However, these features are currently absent and are expected to roll out later this year with iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1.
