Apple is poised to unveil various generative AI capabilities across its technology offerings, expanding the reach of its artificial intelligence initiatives beyond just software. Historically, numerous patents have alluded to camera functionalities within the Apple Watch, with many considering these innovations theoretical. However, recent reports suggest that Apple is ready to transition these ideas into reality, leveraging advanced imaging technology as part of their strategy to bolster its competitive edge in AI.
The Role of Cameras in the Next Generation of Apple Watches
According to the latest edition of Bloomberg’s ‘Power On’ newsletter, tech journalist Mark Gurman has highlighted the incorporation of cameras into upcoming Apple Watch models, suggesting a range of potential AI-driven applications. Notably, 9to5Mac has not clarified if these cameras will serve purposes beyond artificial intelligence, indicating a potentially untapped area of functionality.
While iPhones will remain the preferred devices for photography and videography, the inclusion of cameras in the Apple Watch could offer users a novel convenience—allowing them to capture moments without needing to retrieve their phone. A primary concern revolves around image quality, given the compact form factor of smartwatches. It is likely that their photo capabilities may not match those of larger devices.
“Apple’s ultimate plan for Visual Intelligence goes far beyond the iPhone. The company wants to put the feature at the core of future devices, including the camera-equipped AirPods that I’ve been writing about for several months. Along the way, Apple also wants to shift Visual Intelligence toward its own AI models, rather than those from OpenAI and Google.”
Both standard and Ultra variants of the Apple Watch are reportedly being evaluated for these camera enhancements. The base model may feature a sensor integrated beneath the display, while the larger Apple Watch Ultra could potentially accommodate a camera module alongside the Digital Crown. Anticipation is building for a potential 2027 launch of these features, coinciding with the arrival of AirPods with similar camera technology, assuming Apple leadership can successfully navigate the associated challenges.
Recent setbacks in delivering promised advancements in Apple Intelligence have led to a lawsuit seeking class-action status, as well as delays in the revamped Siri, which is now projected for release in 2026. Furthermore, there has been a restructuring in Apple’s AI leadership, with Mike Rockwell replacing John Giannandrea, previously hailed for his work on the costly Apple Vision Pro initiative.
