Apple Introduces Digital ID in Wallet for Seamless Airport Identification

Apple has unveiled an innovative Digital ID feature within Apple Wallet, designed to enhance your travel experience by allowing identity verification at airports through your iPhone or Apple Watch. This feature enables users to create a Digital ID based on their United States passport, making the process of boarding flights more convenient.

Expanding Identification Options

This new functionality is an extension of Apple’s previous capability that permitted users in 12 U. S.states and Puerto Rico to store their driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet. According to Apple’s announcement, the beta version of Digital ID will initially be available at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 airports nationwide.

Usage and Future Applications

The Digital ID can be utilized for in-person identity verification for domestic flights. Looking ahead, Apple plans to expand its use to various businesses for identity and age verification through in-person interactions, applications, and online platforms. However, Apple has emphasized that Digital ID should not be regarded as a substitute for your physical U. S.passport, particularly for international travels and border crossings.

Creating Your Digital ID

To set up your Digital ID, you will need to access the Wallet app and follow these steps:

  1. Tap the (+) icon at the top of the screen.
  2. Select “Driver’s License or ID Cards”.
  3. Choose “Digital ID”and follow the on-screen prompts.

Ensure you have your passport on hand, as the setup process will require you to scan the photo page and utilize your iPhone to read the chip embedded in your passport. You’ll also be asked to take a selfie and perform certain facial movements to help create a secure identification process.

Easy and Secure Verification Process

To verify your identity at a participating TSA checkpoint, double-click the Side or Home Button to launch Apple Wallet, select your Digital ID, and position your iPhone or Apple Watch near the identity reader. You’ll be able to review the information being requested and authenticate it using either Face ID or Touch ID for added security.

Requirements for Digital ID Usage

To create and present your Digital ID, you must possess either an iPhone 11 or later model, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later, both operating on the latest versions of iOS and watchOS. It is crucial to ensure that your device’s region is set to the United States, that your passport is valid, and that two-factor authentication is activated for your Apple account.

Privacy and Security Measures

Apple has assured users that the data associated with Digital ID is encrypted and stored directly on the device. You will not be required to unlock or physically hand over your device when presenting your ID, as only the essential information for the transaction will be displayed, with an opportunity for review and authorization before sharing.

With this new advancement, Apple continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing mobile security and convenience for travelers across the United States.
