Apple Update Extravaganza: iPhone 5s Receives iOS 26.2.1 Update 13 Years Post-Launch, watchOS 26.2.1 Adds AirTag Compatibility, Plus Third Developer Beta for iOS 26.3 Released

In a significant wave of software updates, Apple has rolled out numerous enhancements over the past few hours. These updates enhance compatibility with the new AirTag, include a unique software patch for the iPhone 5s, and introduce third developer beta builds for a host of platforms: iOS 26.3, iPadOS 26.3, macOS Tahoe 26.3, watchOS 26.3, tvOS 26.3, and visionOS 26.3.

iOS 12.5.8, iOS 26.2.1, and Third Developer Beta Build for iOS 26.3

iOS 12.5.8

The latest update for iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 is here, extending the digital certificate necessary for key functions—such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation services—ensuring their operation up to January 2027.

iOS 26.2.1

This release boosts compatibility with the new AirTag, now equipped with an advanced Ultra Wideband chip, alongside improvements to Bluetooth connectivity and general bug fixes.

Third Developer Beta Build for iOS 26.3

Among the novel features included, Apple has introduced an option to “limit precise location.”This functionality reduces carrier tracking to a neighborhood level, enhancing user privacy. Currently, the following carriers support this feature:

  • US: Boost Mobile
  • Germany: Telekom
  • United Kingdom: EE, BT
  • Thailand: AIS, True

This feature is compatible exclusively with devices utilizing the proprietary C1 or C1X modems.

iOS 26.3 also promises a long-awaited capability for users transitioning from iPhone to Android. A recent announcement noted that an Android Canary build for Pixel smartphones indicates a partnership between Google and Apple, simplifying the switch from Android to Apple devices. An APK teardown suggested that this functionality activates during device setup and facilitates the seamless transfer of personal data, including:

  • Photos and videos
  • Audio files (MP3s)
  • Contacts (device and cloud-synced, including iCloud)
  • SMS, RCS, and iMessages (including attachments)
  • Documents and downloaded files
  • Calendar appointments (device and cloud-synced)
  • Compatible apps free of charge from Google Play
  • WhatsApp chat history
  • Voice memos and notes
  • Call history
  • Home screen layout and custom wallpaper
  • Device settings:
    • Alarms
    • Saved Wi-Fi credentials
    • Font size preferences
    • Screen timeout settings

However, some items will not transfer:

  • In-app purchases
  • Some device settings (e.g., Wi-Fi passwords)
  • DRM-protected music content
  • Safari bookmarks
  • Paid or unavailable apps from Google Play
  • Specific app data not stored in the cloud

Importantly, with iOS 26.3, Apple has implemented this transfer feature, allowing initiation via a QR code or session ID pairing code, marking a significant step toward interoperability.

Additionally, this update introduces the ability to redirect incoming iPhone notifications to supported third-party wearable devices. Users can customize which apps are allowed to forward notifications, though it’s important to note that only one wearable can receive notifications at a time.

This version also enhances the compatibility of the new AirTag’s ‘Precision Finding’ feature on Apple Watch devices, providing haptic and visual cues to track items without the need to access an iPhone, particularly for users of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 or later models.
