In a recent announcement, Apple introduced its latest MacBook Pro models, showcasing two cutting-edge processors: the M4 Pro and M4 Max. These new chips are stated to deliver “greater power than any AI PC chip available today.”
Designed with second-generation three-nanometer technology, the entire M4 processor lineup offers enhanced performance and improved energy efficiency. These processors come equipped with additional cores, advanced graphics capabilities, speedy memory, support for Thunderbolt 5 (which is not available in the standard M4 chip), and more.
The entry-level M4 processor features options for either eight or ten CPU cores alongside a 10-core graphics unit. Apple claims that the M4 is 1.8 times more powerful than the M1 when running applications such as Safari and Excel. Furthermore, built-in graphics performance in games and demanding applications is reportedly twice as fast. Notable enhancements in the M4 include the ability to handle up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and 32GB of high-speed memory.
Moving up the line, the M4 Pro can be configured with a maximum of 14 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores. It offers performance gains of approximately 1.9 times that of the M1 Pro. Apple further emphasizes that the M4 Pro is 2.1 times more powerful than “the leading AI PC chip,”specifically the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V.
The M4 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory operating at 273Gbps. Additionally, it includes Thunderbolt 5 capabilities at 120Gbps, allowing for the support of up to three external monitors.
At the pinnacle of the lineup, the M4 Max features configurations with up to 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores, along with support for 128GB of RAM at a remarkable 546GBps. This processor outperforms the M1 Max by 2.2 times and surpasses the Core Ultra 7 258V by 2.5 times.
M4 | M4 Pro | M4 Max | |
---|---|---|---|
Processor | Up to 10 cores | Up to 14 cores | Up to 16 cores |
Graphics | 10 cores | Up to 20 cores | Up to 40 cores |
Memory | Up to 32GB | Up to 64GB | Up to 128GB |
