Apple Seeks Unique Technology Before Launching Foldable Smartphones

According to a recent report, Apple is aiming to establish a technological edge over its competitors before launching its first foldable smartphone. The tech giant has been noticeably absent from the rapidly evolving foldable phone market that has seen significant advancements in recent years.

While Samsung has solidified its leadership in the foldable and flip phone segments, Huawei made headlines with the introduction of its innovative triple-folding smartphone. It appears that Apple is eager to exert control over specific elements of such an ambitious device.

Earlier rumors indicated that Samsung Display, the screen division of Samsung Electronics, would be responsible for providing display panels for Apple’s folding iPhones. Speculation also arose regarding a potential launch of a clamshell-style folding iPhone in 2026. However, new reports have emerged suggesting that Apple is hesitant to proceed until it addresses the display crease issue, leading to a postponement of its foldable launch until 2027.

Currently, a report from Kipost highlights Apple’s desire to gain greater control over the Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), a crucial element for foldable displays that Samsung Display primarily manages. Beyond the ultra-thin glass, Apple is also focusing on securing control of the backplate—a critical component necessary for supporting the display and ensuring the longevity of the foldable device.

Additionally, Apple is wary that relying too much on a display supplier could hinder its ability to produce a distinctive product compared to its competitors. Since Apple is entering the foldable market later than others, it becomes even more crucial for them to offer something innovative or unique that stands out from existing foldable models to attract consumer interest.
