In a notable shift in strategy, Apple seems to have acknowledged challenges in its in-house revamp of Siri and is now collaborating with Google to create a custom Gemini-based Large Language Model (LLM) to support the updated Siri in the cloud.
Mark Gurman Reports Apple’s Partnership with Google for Siri’s AI Enhancement
According to renowned Apple analyst Mark Gurman, writing in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter, Apple has seemingly conceded that developing an effective in-house AI model for Siri is not feasible at this time. The revamped features, collectively referred to as Apple Intelligence, will now be supported by Google’s AI expertise.
Apple is reportedly paying Google to develop a custom Gemini-powered LLM to run on Apple’s own Private Cloud Compute framework. These LLMs will power the new personalised Siri and AI web-search, and remain completely private like originally planned. Source – @markgurman pic.twitter.com/KaRH0n0lof

Under this new arrangement, Apple plans to utilize Google’s advanced capabilities to design a Gemini-based AI model for integration within its Private Cloud Compute framework. This design will allow simpler tasks to be processed locally, while more intricate operations will be offloaded to Apple’s secure servers using encrypted data.
Key Features of the Upcoming Siri Revamp
The anticipated Siri update will consist of three main components:
- Query Planner: This critical layer manages how Siri fulfills user requests by choosing the most efficient path, which could involve web searches, accessing personal data like calendar events, or utilizing third-party applications through App Intents—an interface allowing seamless app integration with Siri.
 - Knowledge Search System: Siri will include a comprehensive knowledge database enabling it to answer general trivia questions independently, eliminating the reliance on external AI resources like ChatGPT.
 - Summarizer: A fundamental element of Apple Intelligence, this tool will enable Siri to utilize external AI models such as ChatGPT for summarizing various content types, including:
- Notification summaries
 - Emails and Messages summaries
 - Webpage summaries in Safari
 - Writing assistance
 - Summaries of audio content

In this future architecture, Siri’s on-device processing will leverage either Apple’s proprietary foundational models or integrate third-party AIs, like ChatGPT. For complex inquiries, data will be sent to Apple’s private servers where the Gemini model will take over, ensuring user privacy with stateless encryption.
Reports earlier this year indicated that Apple’s development team faced challenges in ensuring Siri’s effectiveness, particularly with app integrations and critical functions in sensitive areas like banking.
Anticipated Features in iOS 26 and iOS 27
Apple is on track to introduce significant functionalities as part of its Spring 2026 iOS update (likely iOS 26.4).Key features expected include:
- In-app Actions:
- Siri will perform context-aware tasks within supported applications through voice commands—actions like adding items to a shopping list, sending messages, or playing music will be possible.

 - Personal Context Awareness:
- Siri will utilize personal data more effectively to offer tailored services, such as locating podcasts mentioned in text messages.

 - On-Screen Awareness:
- Siri will gain capabilities to understand displayed content on the screen, enabling it to execute relevant tasks more seamlessly.

Moreover, several AI features are already present in iOS 26, albeit with limited scope. These include:
- Live translation for the Messages app and during FaceTime calls.
 - Custom backgrounds for conversations in the Messages app using Image Playground.
 - Summaries for voicemail messages.
 - Real-time translation functions for AirPods.
 - Dedicated AI action shortcuts.
 - Third-party developers can utilize Apple’s foundational models for enhanced features.
 - Creation of custom images via ChatGPT in the Image Playground.
 - Combining emojis to create a “Genmoji”in the Image Playground app.
 - Visual insights for screenshots.
 - Notification summaries.

Gurman also speculates that, alongside the new AI features rolling out with iOS 26.4, Apple will unveil “significant updates”in iOS 27 during the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026.
