Apple Postpones Foldable iPad Launch Until 2029 Due to Ongoing Engineering Issues

Ambitious innovation is at the heart of many technology developments, and Apple’s focus on introducing an 18-20 inch foldable device exemplifies this drive. However, the company’s bold vision for a foldable iPad is currently facing significant delays.

Apple’s Foldable iPad Delayed Until 2029 or Later

Recent reports from Bloomberg suggest that Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPad, which was initially slated for release in 2028, may not hit the market until 2029 or beyond. This postponement signals the challenges Apple is facing in its aspiration to deliver a high-quality foldable display.

The primary obstacles reportedly revolve around engineering complications, specifically concerning the device’s weight and its state-of-the-art “giant foldable screen.”Achieving a lightweight product without compromising durability remains a challenge for the tech giant.

Despite these issues, Apple is actively collaborating with Samsung Display to improve the reliability of the foldable panels, particularly in minimizing visible creases—an essential factor for user experience in foldable technology.

This delay does not only pertain to the foldable iPad; Apple’s first foldable iPhone is also encountering hurdles. Challenges surrounding its hinge mechanism and foldable display panels have pushed back development timelines.

Market analysts at Mizuho have noted that Apple appears to be adjusting its production goals, reducing the anticipated output of corresponding display panels from 13 million units to about 9 million units. This shift reflects the ongoing complexities associated with foldable devices.

Looking ahead, Apple’s projected product launch schedule indicates we can expect the iPhone 18 series, including the 18 Air, 18 Pro, and 18 Pro Max, to debut in the fall of 2026. Meanwhile, the foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18e are expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2027, marking another significant leap in Apple’s product offerings.
