Apple Plans Major UI Overhaul for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

Apple’s Upcoming User Interface Overhaul: What You Need to Know

As reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is gearing up for a substantial redesign of the user interface across its flagship products: the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This anticipated overhaul aims to refresh various elements including icons, menus, applications, and buttons.

A Return to Major UI Changes

The last significant redesign was implemented in 2013 with iOS 7, which moved away from skeuomorphic designs to a more streamlined, flat look. With the introduction of iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, codenamed “Luck, ”Apple is set to reinvigorate its visual aesthetic once again.

macOS 16: The “Cheer”Project

For Mac users, the upcoming update, internally referred to as “Cheer, ”will be incorporated into macOS 16. This will mark the most considerable refresh since the launch of macOS Big Sur, which revolutionized the Mac experience with a redesigned interface and introduced features like the Control Center and enhanced privacy settings.

Incorporating VisionOS Features

In this latest iteration, Apple intends to simplify navigation and controls, drawing inspiration from its VisionOS. Users can expect circular app icons, translucent panels, and an easier window management system. However, advanced features such as hand gestures and immersive 3D effects will remain exclusive to the Vision Pro, safeguarding its unique functionalities.

Enhancing the Ecosystem

Apple plans to unveil these new designs at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The overarching aim is to achieve a more cohesive user experience across devices, addressing the current inconsistencies in how icons and applications are presented across different Apple operating systems.

Addressing Sales Slump

This redesign comes at a crucial time, particularly as Apple looks to revitalize its struggling iPhone sales. The company faced an unexpected 5% decline in sales during the last holiday season, underscoring the need for a fresh approach to attract consumers.

Maintaining Distinct Operating Systems

It is important to note that this refresh will not merge Apple’s operating systems. As Gurman explains:

The company believes it can make better Macs and iPads by keeping their operating systems separate. Another benefit for Apple is it encourages consumers to buy both devices rather than getting by with one.

As Apple navigates recent challenges, this ambitious UI overhaul could play a pivotal role in redefining user experiences and potentially boosting device sales.
