Apple Plans Major iPhone Redesign Over the Next Three Years

Exciting Developments for the iPhone 17 Series and Beyond

Last August, industry analysts speculated that Apple’s approach to the iPhone 16 series was primarily focused on stabilizing sales, with groundbreaking features planned for the future, specifically the iPhone 17 lineup in 2025. By October, Apple’s engineering chief, John Ternus, emphasized this vision, dubbing the iPhone 17 series the company’s “most ambitious in the product’s history.”

Anticipation Surrounding the iPhone 17 Launch

With the launch of the iPhone 17 only weeks away, many are wondering if the heightened expectations are warranted. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is about to initiate a three-year era of significant design changes, paving the way for one of the most substantial evolutions in the iPhone’s history.

Design Innovations on the Horizon

Gurman reveals that Apple will kick off its design revamp this September with the introduction of the iPhone 17 Air, mirroring the 2008 debut of the MacBook Air, which prioritized a lighter and thinner profile. This move towards a sleeker design, however, may involve some compromises: a reduced battery size, the elimination of the physical SIM card slot, and a decrease in the number of camera sensors.

What to Expect from Other iPhone 17 Models

While other iPhone 17 models won’t drastically stray from the existing iPhone 16 series, notable updates will include an enhanced camera system and a redesigned back panel. Additionally, the Pro variants are expected to showcase a vibrant orange color option.

The Future: Foldable iPhone and Beyond

In a related development, Apple plans to introduce its first foldable iPhone in 2026. Gurman suggests this device will resemble Samsung’s book-style foldables that unfold into a compact tablet and will feature up to five cameras. Moreover, it will also forgo the physical SIM card slot in favor of Touch ID, marking a significant shift in design philosophy.

The foldable device is anticipated to be available in classic black and white and is likely to debut with Apple’s proprietary C2 modem. Looking ahead to 2027, which marks the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple is rumored to unveil a glass-centric model showcasing curved glass that complements the Liquid Glass interface on iOS.

Apple’s Ongoing Innovation Drive

As Apple continues to innovate, the company has ambitious plans for the years ahead. In addition to the iPhone 17e planned for 2026, updated iPads and MacBooks featuring M5 chips are also on the horizon, solidifying the iPhone’s central role in Apple’s product development strategy.
