This deal is described as an “acquihire, ”primarily aimed at integrating Prompt AI’s talented workforce and technology into Apple’s operations. Employees who choose not to join Apple will receive a severance package that includes a reduced salary.
Background on Prompt AI
Founded in 2023 by PhD researcher Tete Xiao and Trevor Darrell, co-founder of the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) lab, Prompt AI employs a small team of 11. The startup has attracted interest from several firms, including Elon Musk’s xAI and Neuralink, but Apple appears to be leading the acquisition process. Current investors have been informed that they will receive a distribution of funds from Apple’s investment, although they will not fully recoup their original investment.

Despite its promising technology, Prompt AI’s CEO, Tete Xiao, recently announced during an all-hands meeting that the existing business model does not align with their vision. Consequently, the company plans to retire its flagship product, the Seemour app, which was designed to connect with home security cameras for real-time object detection and alerts. User data will be deleted following notifications to customers, highlighting that Apple’s interest likely lies in the underlying technology and expertise of the team.
