Apple might feature 12GB RAM in upcoming iPhone versions

This year, Apple has enhanced the RAM specifications across its iPhone 16 series, integrating 8GB of RAM in all models. The introduction of increased RAM is designed to facilitate the efficient operation of Apple Intelligence features, thereby enhancing overall device performance. It appears that Apple intends to pursue this trend, potentially introducing 12GB of RAM in subsequent iPhone iterations.

According to preliminary reports, the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to be equipped with 12GB of RAM, alongside upgraded cooling technology. Furthermore, there are indications that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, anticipated for release in 2026, may also come with 12GB of RAM.

In an interview, Johny Srouji, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Technology, discussed the necessity for 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence effectively on iPhones, without sacrificing performance. This could explain why last year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models did not support Apple’s suite of AI features. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reportedly stated that only the next year’s Pro Max variant will feature 12GB of RAM, while the standard models, potentially including the iPhone 17 Slim or Air, will remain equipped with 8GB of RAM.

Additionally, a leaker known as Mobile Chip Expert shared on Weibo that at least one variant of the iPhone 18 is likely to move from InFo (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging to WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging, which would support the inclusion of 12GB of RAM.

To elaborate on the distinction, InFo packaging integrates various components, such as memory, directly onto a circuit board, which minimizes package thickness while enhancing speed and power efficiency.

Conversely, WMCM packaging enables the fusion of multiple components within a single enclosure, providing enhanced flexibility and performance. This approach allows for the integration of CPUs, GPUs, DRAM, and other accelerators, such as AI and ML chips, into one compact package. At this point, it remains uncertain which specific model in the 2026 iPhone 18 lineup will feature the RAM increase and the advanced chip technology.
