Trump’s Executive Order: The Gulf of America
Since assuming office, former President Donald Trump has enacted numerous executive orders, one of the most controversial being the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This change has been officially integrated into the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) of the United States, compelling mapping applications to adopt this new nomenclature.
Major Mapping Services Respond
Recently, Google Maps has taken the lead in implementing this change by displaying the Gulf of America instead of the traditional Gulf of Mexico. According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple Maps is following suit, with plans to showcase the Gulf of America name exclusively to U. S.users, and a global rollout is expected soon.
Though the initial display in Apple Maps still shows the Gulf of Mexico, users will find the updated name—Gulf of America—when viewing the details. This transition aligns with the mandates set forth by GNIS, which guides geographic naming conventions across the nation.
Bing Maps Joins the Shift
In addition to Google and Apple, Microsoft has also updated Bing Maps to reflect this renaming. A spokesperson from the company stated, “In accordance with established product policies, we are updating Bing Maps to reflect the Geographic Names Information System’s nomenclature in the United States, which includes changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in the U. S., ”as reported by CNET.
Public Reaction and Global Implications
At present, this modification has largely impacted users within the United States. However, as tech giants plan to implement this name change worldwide in the forthcoming months, there are growing concerns regarding the international response, particularly among citizens of Mexico. Social media platforms have already seen a surge in opposition from users voicing their discontent with this official change.
The implications of renaming such a significant geographical feature continue to unfold, inviting discussions on cultural sensitivity and regional acknowledgment.
