Apple’s long-anticipated OLED MacBook Pro is on track for a 2026 launch, featuring a redesigned display that eliminates the notch at the top. However, the news isn’t as promising for MacBook Air enthusiasts, as reports indicate that an OLED variant of this model is not expected to debut until 2028. Additionally, the future MacBook Air models will miss out on a significant upgrade, positioning them below the Pro versions.
OLED MacBook Air Expected in 2028: Features Lacking Compared to Pro Models
A recent display timeline released by research firm Omdia outlines the rollout of OLED upgrades across Apple’s Mac and iPad lines, projecting advancements through 2030. According to the timeline, the MacBook Air series will be two years behind the Pro series, receiving its OLED upgrade only in 2028. Notably, unlike its Pro counterpart, the OLED MacBook Air will retain the notch, although there is speculation about a possible reduction in its size.
Apple has consistently positioned its ‘Pro’ models with enhanced designs and internal specifications, and this trend is set to continue. While the MacBook Pro will integrate a smaller hole-punch display, making it a more attractive option, the timeline suggests that similar enhancements for the MacBook Air are yet to be determined. As this technology matures within Apple’s product ecosystem, we may eventually see such upgrades.
Even with the notch and lack of a hole-punch display, the OLED MacBook Air will be a significant improvement over existing LCD models. Users can look forward to enhanced contrast ratios and deeper blacks, coupled with greater power efficiency provided by the OLED panels. While this upgrade might not meet all expectations, it marks a notable step forward in the MacBook Air lineup.
In addition to the MacBook developments, Apple is also expected to roll out an OLED display for the iPad mini 8 in 2026, followed by an upgrade for the iPad Air in 2027. As we continue to monitor these advancements, be sure to check back for the latest updates on Apple’s innovative offerings.
