Recently, we discussed the impressive launch of the iPhone Air in China, which saw the ultra-slim flagship sell out rapidly in both online and physical stores. However, it is essential to recognize that a product’s success in one region does not guarantee similar performance globally. This disparity has prompted a research firm to revise its production projections for the iPhone Air, decreasing the forecast by 1 million units for the end of 2025.
Sales Performance of Other iPhone 17 Models Remains Strong
According to a report from Mizuho Securities, a prominent investment banking and securities firm, the sales data indicates that the iPhone Air is struggling, which has led analysts to downgrade Apple’s production expectations. Previously, Apple anticipated annual iPhone shipments of 246 million units for this year. However, this figure has now been adjusted downward by 7%, bringing the new forecast to 229 million units for 2026. Interestingly, Mizuho’s report highlights that all other iPhone 17 variants, excluding the iPhone Air, are experiencing robust sales.
The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max show a slight increase in shipments compared to the same period last year, while the base model of the iPhone 17 is performing exceptionally well. Notably, the forecasts for the non-Pro versions have been revised upwards by 2 million units, while the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max saw their production projections increase by 1 million and 4 million units, respectively.
In contrast, the iPhone Air now faces a reduction of 1 million units in its production forecast. Despite this setback, Apple’s overall production is still set to increase, from 88 million to 94 million units for the year. A significant advantage for the iPhone Air lies in its strong popularity in China, which remains the largest smartphone market globally.
While Samsung has faced challenges with its Galaxy S25 Edge, resulting in the cancellation of the upcoming Galaxy S26 Edge, Apple continues to maintain its momentum with the iPhone Air. It remains uncertain whether this device will continue to capture the market’s interest in the coming weeks. If demand were to decline, Apple may have to consider adjusting production for its other three models accordingly.
