The introduction of reverse wireless charging has long been a hallmark feature among Apple’s competitors, making it somewhat characteristic for the tech titan to incorporate such technology at a later stage. Although various iPhone models have supported Qi wireless charging extensively, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are poised to be the first devices in Apple’s lineup to feature reverse wireless charging, contingent upon the accuracy of recent rumors.
Exploring Reverse Wireless Charging: Potential and Power Output
According to reports circulating on Weibo, a user going by the name Setsuna Digital has indicated that Apple is in the testing phase for reverse wireless charging capabilities on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, potentially achieving an output of up to 7.5W. This wattage, if verified, would signify a departure from Apple’s historical slow adoption of advanced charging technologies.
Notably, this 7.5W capability would surpass that of Samsung’s flagship models, namely the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the previous year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, which are limited to just 4.5W. This advancement could prove quite beneficial for users needing to quickly charge their devices, such as AirPods, adding a layer of convenience for those often on the go.
However, for reverse wireless charging to be truly functional and user-friendly on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, there is a critical hurdle that Apple must address: the size of the battery. Currently, the largest battery in an iPhone model is 4, 685mAh, found in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. For effective reverse charging capabilities, a larger battery is essential.

In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra features a significantly larger battery, which, when using reverse charging, could deplete quickly. Happily, both Apple and Samsung are reportedly investing in silicon-carbon technology, designed to boost battery capacity while maintaining a similar thickness. An iPhone outfitted with a 5, 500mAh battery supporting reverse wireless charging would be the ideal scenario; however, it remains uncertain if Apple will take this leap. Until then, it is wise to approach these rumors with cautious optimism as we await further developments.
