
While Apple may not currently lead the pack in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in comparison to giants like OpenAI and Google, the tech giant is strategically harnessing AI to accelerate its custom chip design processes. Apple’s endeavor in custom silicon has already exceeded industry expectations, and the company now aims to refine its chip design further, potentially enhancing overall chip performance.

At a recent event in Belgium, Apple’s hardware chief, Johny Srouji, articulated the company’s vision for AI-enhanced chip design. He received recognition from the semiconductor research organization Imec and indicated that Apple is exploring generative AI technologies to innovate its chip designs, ultimately leading to improved performance metrics. Srouji elaborated on the transformative potential of generative AI, stating that its application could significantly expedite design work and enhance productivity. He commented, “Generative AI techniques have a high potential in getting more design work in less time, and it can be a huge productivity boost.”Furthermore, he acknowledged established electronic design automation firms like Cadence and Synopsys, which may play key roles in overcoming chip design challenges.
Despite expectations, Apple’s recent AI initiatives have faced scrutiny. Critics pointed out the delays in delivering the much-anticipated Personalized Siri experience and the absence of significant updates in iOS 16, released earlier this month. Although Apple introduced a refreshed Liquid Glass design across its platforms, many felt that AI advancements were insufficiently highlighted during the company’s WWDC 2025 keynote.
Srouji emphasized a comprehensive strategy for AI integration into chip development, moving beyond merely enhancing user-facing features. He reflected on Apple’s substantial evolution from the A4 chips to its current custom silicon offerings, noting the company’s transition away from Intel-based architecture.
“Moving the Mac to Apple Silicon was a huge bet for us, ”he explained.“There was no backup plan, no split-the-lineup plan, so we went all in, including a monumental software effort.”
