A Fresh Approach to Subscription Trials
Historically, Apple has opted for limited free trial promotions, typically bundled with new device purchases. The upcoming free weekend marks a notable shift, as the company aims to attract new viewers by providing full access to its library of acclaimed original content.
Current Pricing and Offerings
Apple TV+ subscriptions are currently priced at $9.99 per month. Additionally, the service is available through Apple One, which starts at $19.95 monthly and encompasses other services such as Apple Arcade, Apple Music, and a 50GB iCloud+ plan. The Premier version, at $37.95 monthly, provides greater benefits including Apple Fitness+ and Apple News+ for up to six family members.
Market Position and Competition
As of October 2024, Apple TV+ boasts a library of over 250 original shows and movies. However, despite its extensive catalog, it currently ranks behind competitors Paramount+ and Hulu in streaming market share, holding only 8% of the market according to JustWatch. In comparison, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix lead the market with shares of 22% and 21% respectively.
Staying Competitive in a Dynamic Landscape
Interestingly, other major streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix have begun offering lower-cost, ad-supported subscription options. However, Apple has not indicated any plans to adopt a similar strategy for Apple TV+, highlighting its commitment to a premium, ad-free experience.
Exciting Content on the Horizon
This promotional weekend precedes the much-anticipated second season of the award-winning series Severance, which premieres on January 17. Additionally, viewers can catch up on other popular titles including the critically acclaimed Ted Lasso, which is expected to renew for a fourth season in 2025.
