Apple Lagging in AI Competition Due to Delayed Personalized Siri Launch, While Rivals Advance with Superior AI Assistants

Apple has postponed the release of its upcoming personalized assistant features until next year. This delay is impacting both users and employee morale. Although some functionalities are reportedly operational, there is concern that the new Siri enhancements might become another misstep akin to the much-criticized “AirPower”project. Internal sources indicate that several of Siri’s personalized features are currently functioning to a degree.

Current Status of Apple’s Personalized Siri Features

Robby Walker, Apple’s senior director for Siri, has shared updates on the development of the digital assistant. During an internal all-hands meeting, Walker demonstrated a selection of Personalized Siri features that are said to be operational, albeit with limitations. According to insights from Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, these features are functioning at 80 percent efficiency.

Apple’s swift integration of generative AI has not been without challenges, leading to a tarnished public image due to unmet previous promises. Originally set to debut with the iOS 18.4 update, the rollout has now been pushed back to May. Speculation points to further delays, possibly moving the target to iOS 18.5. The company has since indicated that users can expect the improved Siri experience “in the coming year, ”yet it remains evident that substantial developmental work is still needed.

During the meeting, examples of the technology’s capabilities were shared: it could retrieve a driver’s license number upon request and locate specific photos with impressive accuracy. Additionally, it demonstrated the ability to control apps through voice commands, such as embedding content into emails and modifying recipient lists.

While these features show promise, Apple has yet to publicly unveil them, leaving their actual state somewhat uncertain. John Gruber from Daring Fireball observed that the features currently exhibit a success rate of approximately 66 to 80 percent. Although these chances of effectiveness are encouraging, they indicate that the features are not yet a finalized product capable of delivering consistent results. Thus, Apple needs to ensure these functionalities are meticulously refined before introducing them to its user base.

Furthermore, Apple has not provided a concrete timeline for when the Personalized Siri experience will be available next year. Nevertheless, a note on the iPhone 16 product pages mentions that the features are “in development.”

Siri’s personal context understanding, onscreen awareness, and in-app actions are in development and will be available with a future software update.

In contrast, Google and OpenAI continue to lead in the AI sector with their innovative models, actively integrating generative AI technologies to enhance their offerings. Google recently unveiled its Gemini 2.0, which raises the bar for performance standards within the industry. Comparatively, Apple’s current position appears to be lagging significantly as it struggles to advance in AI development.

Gurman anticipates that the new features will launch as soon as next year. However, from a broader standpoint, the ongoing delays may harm Apple’s reputation and hinder its competitiveness in the AI landscape. Furthermore, there are concerns that upcoming features for iOS 19 could also experience delays, highlighting the challenges Apple faces in its software development endeavors.
