Apple Poised to Launch M5 Chip Products in 2023
In recent months, Apple has introduced a range of devices powered by its M4 chips, including the MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and iMac. As anticipation builds, the tech giant is also set to unveil its next-generation M5 chip lineup this year.
Upcoming iPad Pro Featuring M5 Chip
Mark Gurman, in this week’s Power On newsletter, reveals that the iPad Pro will be the pioneer device to incorporate the M5 chip. Currently in “late testing”, these new iPad Pro models are expected to begin production in the latter half of this year. The models are identified by their codenames: J817, J818, J820, and J821.
Modest Upgrades for the Latest iPad Pro
Last year marked a significant update for the iPad Pro, highlighted by the transition to a Tandem OLED display, the introduction of the M4 chip, and a sleeker, lighter design. With the forthcoming release of the M5 chip, along with some enhancements in AI capabilities, substantial changes to this year’s iPad Pro appear unlikely.
Future Developments: M6 iPad Pro on the Horizon
Beyond the M5 chip, Gurman indicates that Apple is already advancing toward the M6 version of the iPad Pro, which will feature the company’s proprietary modem chips. This next iteration is slated for a 2027 release.
MacBook Pro and MacBook Air Set for M5 Introduction
The iPad Pro won’t be the sole product featuring the M5 chip this year. Gurman also mentions that the MacBook Pro will debut its M5 chip approximately around the same timeframe it launched the M4 processor in 2024 and the M3 in 2023. Additionally, a successor in the MacBook Air series is expected to make its debut in October.
Performance Enhancements and Future Overhauls
This year’s refresh of the MacBook Pro will prioritize performance upgrades with the new M5 chips. However, insiders hint at a significant overhaul for the MacBook Pro lineup in 2026, when it will receive M6 chips, OLED screens, and a further reduced footprint. As Gurman asserts, “I don’t expect the MacBook Pro to undergo a major redesign until around 2026, when the M6 model is slated for release.”
